The answer is expectations. When you make sequels to one of the greatest blockbusters in cinema history, the comparison is going to be harsh. Some here may be too young to remember, but I saw the original Jurassic Park in theaters. None of the sequels were the event that the first movie was-- Even the new film. It was all that movie fans, kids and merchandising firms could think about for a year and a half. You couldn't escape it no matter where you turned.
The Lost World was at one point, and likely still is by a vocal minority, considered Spielberg's worst film. (They've clearly never seen 1941.) I think that opinion has softened over the years and the film is looked at more favorably by general audiences/critics.
Really, none of the sequels remotely tap the level that Jurassic Park is at, but that's okay. They're good movies in their own right. Not great movies, but fun and they carry on the franchise name with some respect.
I for one think The Lost World is the next best movie in the franchise while the other two are neck and neck for 3rd place.
Profden,
I noticed that and immediately thought it to have coincided with the original name. I'm not sure what the post-production staff was thinking here, giving it a "D" instead of an "I", but I have a hard time believing that a movie of this scale let that 'oops' moment slip by.
JPJoe,
Great comparison. Never noticed that.
Easily The Lost World. It's simply a better made film. I don't think Jurassic Park 3 is as bad as some people here, but The Lost World has a stronger sense of wonder and scale. The action scenes are directed more competently and, unlike Jurassic Park 3, there doesn't always have to be a dinosaur on-screen to evoke a sense of danger.
It's a little long in the tooth, but Spielberg makes up for that by book ending slow sequences with interesting and exciting scenes. And Malcolm made an excellent lead character.
The Lost World all the way.
^I didn't notice that. If I see JW a third time I'll look for it
GORILLAGODZILLA - That was an exceedingly fun battle to read! I am very pleased with the amount of detail you placed within the scenario! Excellent work! Thank you so much for taking the time to create this and present it to us! :)
SWORD SAM - Between the two films you have presented, I will take The Lost World. :)
SwordSam
Baryonyx
Jurassic Park (No, Duh.)
I Like Godzilla Too. Yep. I'm Good Now.

Dr. Henry Wu does say this in Jurassic World "Nothing in Jurassic World is natural, we have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals. And if the genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different. But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for more teeth. "
Ataque a los Jurásicos
This is AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing this.
UTAHRAPTOR519 - Hahaha! That was fun! I very much enjoy reading your stories! Please, keep up the excellent work! :)
When I was in elementary school, JP3 was my favorite in the franchise. I loved the introduction to the spinosaurus, the pterosaurs, and since I was an 8 year old boy, I naturally loved the poop secene. But now, looking back on it, I see all the flaws people are talking about. The cell phone, and the character of Amanda Kirby. I still love it, I don't think it's BS like people are saying, but I can't deny it is flawed. Everytime I rewatch TLW, I love it more and more, it's now my second favorite after JW.
Name: Troodon Ridiculetalis (Ridiculously deadly wounding tooth)
Height: 7-8 feet
Super-enhanced Troodon brain suited for invention and creation of tools + wings from any flying dino
Hunting strategy: Pack of T. Ridiculetalis uses stealth and wings to move silently to vantage point over prey, then open fire with light-weight rocket lanchers
Fence height: As high as they need to build it to keep out any dangerous animals
:D
This was pretty good for a first fight! :)
Well that's enough for me to infer that Tyrannosaurs were pretty widely ditributed :D
Cool find.
SHAMBS: The statement about tyrannosauroid fossil finds refers to the Superfamily as a whole rather than just Tyrannosauridae (Tyrannosaurus, Tarbosaurus, Gorgosaurus, etc.). It takes in account Proceratosauridae, Coeluridae, and several other members that don't fall into the aforementioned families. Though the only members that come from South America and Australia are members of Megaraptora, which has a disputed ancestry, so they might not be tyrannosaurs at all.
@Rex,
Yes, you are right. In addition, according to Wikipedia (which is not an entirely reliable source) tyrannosaurs existed in South America and Australia. Is that true?
"Fossils of tyrannosauroids have been recovered on what are now the continents of North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrannosauroidea
Although I think that this article is about Tyrannosauroidea superfamily, and not about Tyrannosauridae family.
oh yeah I guess confused it with something else
I saw both, and it made me think how wrong our designs of T.rex was. We`d usually think of the JP design, with a very large head and a slightly lean body (VERY LEAN in the case of Rexy when we see her in JW), when those CGI designs actually make a lot more sense.
Both were very informative, with interviews from real experts with up-to-date information (or as recent as possible, considering the Death Match specimen was unearthed 9 years ago).
I remember back in 2013 or early 2014 that some early concept art was leaked of Owen running from a large carnivorous dinosaur, and then the headshot of that animal was released. It turned out to be the Indominus rex, in the movie, but the concept art was too detailed to be her. It looked exactly like Allosaurus or Saurophaganax. So it`s probable that a true allosaurid (not carcharadontasaurid) was inspiration for Indominus rex in it`s concept art infancy, but the final product had too much of a carcharadontasaurid and abelisaurid mix for the skull.
If it's a new genus, I wonder what they will name it. Nihonotyrannus or Nipponotyranus maybe?
Hello, I'm Phorusrhacos.
My favorite dinosaur is Ceratosaurus.
My favorite Jurassic Park film is the first film. Jurassic Park III had an interesting concept with the whole dinosaurs living in a tropical lost world, but it just didn't have that Speilberg touch.
Something interesting about me would be that I'm a big fan of phorusrhacids a.k.a terror birds. I've always found them interesting ever since I saw a PaleoWorld episode when I was young. I feel they are pretty underrated animals when compared to dinosaurs and sabre-toothed cats and the like.
Who knows it could have swam the oceans, breathed fire, had spines on it's back, and reeked havok on everything. ;) ;)
Hmmm that reminds me the old good Diabolus Rex conversation about how he would look like and some"official" :P photos had been uploaded about his look...remember?:
Saurophaganax
and the Allosaurus...
so that fake photos werent so fake at all because the I-rex design is too similar to them
Cool.
And Shambs, there are actually a lot of Asian tyrannosaurs...
Tarbosaurus
Alioramus
Zhuchengtyrannus
Guanlong
Dilong
Yutyrannus
Sinotyrannus
Probably others I forgot
And they've also been found in Europe(Eotyrannus)
Tyrannosaurus practically rulled the whole Northern Hempisphere
SCI-FI KING25 - Wow! That is fantastic! I have a feeling that the 10m "height" is supposed to be "length" as Mr. Miyata compared it to the 5-12m expressions found amongst American Tyrannosaurids. Can you imagine a 33ft tall Tyrannosaurus?! YIKES! This was a very neat find! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! :)
I thought of tyrannosaurids as a North American group of dinosaurs, with the exception of Tarbosaurus (and not counting the ancestors as Guanlong or dilong). Indeed a fantastic discovery!
*Than. You need to watch on your grammar. Just be more cautious.
Well looking forward!
^Not sure, going too make it better then this one though.
When do you plan on posting your next fight?
(Welcome to Scified BTW!)
I'm a Level 16, considering I got the game on Wednsday. My LARGEST is the Argentinosaurus, but my most POWERFUL is the Stegosaurus.
DYNAMOSARUS IMPERIOSUS - Yes; which is why I stated in my original response that there is no way to state that Saurophaganax did not share similarities to the I-rex. However, now that I have had time to ponder the physical aspects of the animals you desire to compare, I have doubt that even Saurophaganax could open its mouth to the degree evidenced by the I-rex. I draw this conclusion due to the fact that the I-rex was shown to have snake DNA within its physiology. Looking further still, the I-rex sometimes adopted a semi-quadrupedal stance - a trait that is likely not displayed by the Saurophaganax. With regard to the method of kiling: that is a mannerism, not a physical characteristic. Certainly, such actions take into account physcial aptitude; however, the manner in which an animal takes prey is based in psychology. Watching the I-rex slay the ankylosaurus was not an educational piece - it was a scene in a film meant to evoke a sense of savagery, to wit the I-rex's mental instability (once again, the mental state of the predator). The I-rex was on the rampage and wanted to kill, doing so in the swiftest means it could. I have considerable doubt that the design leads chose to model a set of brief instances after the involved biomechanics present in the killing methods of an actual dinosaur.
