The beginning of production for Jurassic World 2 is now less then five months away. As the film gets closer, the director Juan Antonio Bayona has begun discussing the film at length in interviews. The latest interview comes from the Spanish publication 'Noticiasrcn', during Bayona's promotion for his latest film 'A Monster Calls'.
"It will be darker and scarier then the previous film," Bayona remarked. "Obviously when you have Chris Pratt it will also be very funny. But it will be darker. It is a second step in a trilogy, and the second step is always dark as in 'The Empire Strikes back or the 'Wrath of Khan' which are the examples you always get."
Bayona continued describing this darker tone. "The film takes the story where it has never been before. To me it surprised me. We are going to places where the saga has never been before, and at the same time we are paying tribute to the franchise. We will take it a step further."
Bayona teased some of these steps in the end of his interview. "There are things that will happen that people are not expecting and they really are shocking."
Bayona's description of the film's tone in his comparison to these two classic films is important. In both 'Empire Strikes Back' and 'Wrath of Khan', the heroes manage to either gain victory or escape a villain but at a great cost. There does appear that in this film that even if the protagonists are safe, that there may still be consequences to deal with.
Bayona's comments about the film going to places that are unexpected may hearken back to his comments earlier last week. If this film does discuss different ways in which dinosaurs can be exploited, that certainly would be an avenue that the films have never before discussed.
Bayona's comments about something unexpected occurring may indicate the possibility of some unforeseen plot twist late in the film. It remains to be seen if this shocking indicates a unexpected death, or if it occurs to some action by a character in the film that was not foreseen by the audience.
Jurassic World 2 will be released on June 22, 2018. Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt will return to play Claire Dearing and Owen Grady in the film. The movie will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who has directed 'The Impossible.
