Jurassic World 2 to have a Political Element!

The tone of Jurassic World 2 has been the topic of much discussion,as Director Juan Antonio Bayona is renowned for directing thematically dark films. Comingsoon.net caught up with Bayona, and asked him about how the next Jurassic film would continue the series theme of the exploitation and commercialization of dinosaurs. Bayona affirmed that not only would the film expand on this theme, but also offer contemporary political parallels.

“Yeah, you’re right, I think there’s a lot of that in the new ‘Jurassic.’ I think there’s a lot of possessiveness towards our creations. I think it’s very interesting where the new movie is heading. It’s so different from the other films, it talks a lot about the moment we live in right now. It’s darker… but at the same time it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a blockbuster, you have Chris Pratt, it’s a great adventure, but it’s very interesting the way the film is darker than the other ones.”

From Bayona's comments, it certainly seems that the concept of dinosaurs as objects to be exploited with continue. It very much aligns with the sentiments of both Peter Ludlow and Vic Hoskins who held the view that "we made it, we own it". Bayona once again reiterates his comments about the film being darker, which could indicate a strong shift in tone from Jurassic World.

Bayona expanded on this shift in tone, when quizzed about how the Jurassic World sequel compared to his previous movies. Bayona is known for a certain tone in his films, and he affirmed to the website that was part of the reason he was hired.

“You need to adapt, you need to know where you are,” suggested Bayona. “‘Jurassic’ is going to be very different from ‘A Monster Calls’ or ‘The Orphanage,’ but they called me because they loved ‘The Orphanage’ and ‘The Impossible’ and they wanted me to be leading the new ‘Jurassic.’ I think you’re going to find some stuff that will remind you of my movies. At the same time I’m very aware that this is Steven’s baby and I’m going to take care of his baby as much as possible, knowing where I am all the time.”

Bayona seems to be making sure to strike a balance between the tone of his filmography, and that of Jurassic Park. It is interesting that Bayona should mention that some aspects of his films should find a parallel in the Jurassic World sequel as well. This may indicate that there will be more overt horror elements in this film.

Jurassic World 2 will be released on June 22, 2018. Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt will return to play Claire Dearing and Owen Grady in the film. Rafe Spall and Toby Jones will also star alongside Justice Smith. The movie will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who has directed 'The Impossible.
