With talk of the Jurassic World sequel heating up following a tease from Colin Trevorrow regarding a director announcement, it's time we look back at what almost became the starting point for the new Jurassic trilogy. Before Jurassic World was born, we had Jurassic Park IV (or Jurassic Park 4). Early storyboards, concept artwork and scripts for JP4 envisioned a very different Jurassic world than the world we got with Trevorrow's creation.
Shared by our friends @jurassicparkiv on Twitter, the above image (top of this article) featured early concept designs for the humanoid-hybrid Velociraptors which were to-be featured in Jurassic Park 4. Though some argue this photo is of solo portfolio work, the concept of human DNA infused Dinosaurs was a concept entertained early on in JP4's development process.
Thanks to another Twitter user, @thybmb we have what is being claimed to be an early draft for Jurassic Park 4 by John Sayles. This story featured Pterosaur attacks on little league baseball games, a reclamation of Nedry's aerosol can from Isla Nublar, the late John Hammond and a Velociraptor named Spartacus. No, we're not kidding. You can download and read the script for yourself here. In case it gets taken down, we have a backup.
Looking toward the future and Jurassic World 2, it's reassuring to know that Universal and company moved away from the idea of mixing Human and Dinosaur DNA. Thanks to Trevorrow the Jurassic Park franchise is going to live on, expanding its mythology while not flying off the rails and exploring dangerous territory. Though the sequel, which releases in 2018 will feature Dinosaurs inhabiting the mainland, the general feel of Jurassic Park remains and will hopefully remain untainted.
