Last week we reported a piece put out by Collider which cited producer Frank Marshall discussing the current state of Juan Antonio Beyona's Jurassic World sequel. Since then, Collider have uploaded the interview in full, which includes a few more quotes from Frank regarding Jurassic World 2, predominantly the challenges they're facing with "upping the bar" from the last film to ensure audiences remain captivated. This of course includes a solid story above all else, as well as thrilling new Dinosaurs and action sequences!
Collider: If I’m not mistaken, Colin [Trevorrow] and his writing partner, Derek [Connolly], developed a story for the sequel, are you guys still sticking with that story, or has Bayona taken more of an ownership of the story?
Frank Marshall: No, as a director Bayona has his input but Colin and Derek are writing the script, so there have been numerous meetings and we have the template for the movie, but of course he’s putting in his own ideas and taking ownership of it, but it’s pretty much the same story that they originally came up with.
Collider: Do you look at the challenge of coming up with new action set pieces with dinosaurs as something exciting, is it nerve-racking, can you talk about the pressure on one-upping what you’ve done before?
Frank Marshall: that pressure both on Bourne movies and on Jurassicmovies [Laughs], we set the bar pretty high. For me it’s always a bout story, as long as the action sequences move the story forward, that’s what’s important, and I think just having to look and see how we can involve the characters in the story with whatever dinosaur we have in the action sequence. So, it’s a challenge but a healthy challenge.
When Jurassic World began making headlines, the hot topics discussed seemed to focus on the film's introduction of a terrifying new Dinosaur, which ended up being the Indominus Rex as well as the fact that the general population were no longer impressed by Dinosaurs and required something new to maintain interest. Though the plot for Jurassic World 2 remains a mystery for now, we can't help but wonder - what on Earth will be the next big thing for the Jurassic franchise? The genetically modified hybrid concept has been done, the Dinosaur sanctuary on a remote island has been done and we can assume that following Jurassic World's falling out, Masrani will go bankrupt and no company will insure another park. No wonder the process of creating something completely new for the sequel poses a serious challenge. However, I'm sure whatever Trevorrow and Connolly have planned, will impress and entice audiences to visit Jurassic World once more.
What are your thoughts? Where do you think Jurassic World 2 will take us? Let me know your thoughts in the comments and be sure to check out the full interview over at Collider!
