As Jurassic World 2 nears the start of preproduction, more updates regarding the sequel have steadily trickled in. The latest update regarding the movie comes from Director J.A. Bayona, as he is currently undergoing the press tour for his newest movie 'A Monster Calls'. Interviewed by BirthMoviesDeath regarding the Jurassic Sequel, Bayona gave an intriguing hint.
“Claire [Bryce Dallas Howard] doesn’t wear high heels in this movie, There will be new dinosaurs, Finding that proper balance between what the audience is expecting and new stuff is always a challenge in doing a sequel.”
While the subject of Claire's new footwear has been the subject of news elsewhere, this is the first time Bayona has commented regarding the prehistoric denizens of the film. Each Jurassic Sequel has delivered several new animals into the prehistoric menagerie of the Jurassic canon. Bayona also seems to be hinting as well that we will get several returning dinosaurs such as T-rex and Velociraptors, while making room for new stars, such as how the Mosasaur was introduced in Jurassic World. Bayona also went on to tease the greater scale of the sequel in contrast to his previous films:
That film [The Impossible] and A Monster Calls were very complex technical challenges, and also complicated stories to put on the screen. But this is the biggest production I have ever done; it’s massive, and it’s a learning experience. I’ve never done anything like it.”
The massive scope of the film certainly sounds as if the film may be bigger in scale than even Jurassic World. It will certainly be interesting to see in which direction the story expands after the events of the previous movie. Bayona went on to say that he has been a lifelong fan of the franchise as well:
"I remember the first time I saw that first Brachiosaurus, and the huge impact it had on me,I have always been a huge fan of Steven Spielberg, and I never thought I would end up doing a Jurassic movie. So it’s very exciting and a privilege to work with Steven, Frank Marshall and the other producers.”"
Bayona's profession of lifelong fandom of the series is also extremely encouraging. It means that this director is very aware of the foundation that he is working off of. Bayona declared that he was aware of the need to collaborate with the producers, in order to preserve their vision:
"You know, they’ve all seen The Orphanage, and the [Jurassic] script has many things in common with the movies I’ve done so far. The thing is, I also consider this job to be a collaborative filmmakers’ effort, you know? You have Steven, you have Colin, you have Frank, a producer who is also a director, and it’s their baby. So I am very much aware that I need to take care of their baby as well as possible.”"
