As Jurassic World 2 nears the start of filming, several updates have already been released regarding the new cast members who will be joining Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. However, details regarding the dinosaurs in the movie have been scarce. The director, Juan Antonio Bayona gave some details regarding practical effects for the sequel while being interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter at Wednesday's premiere of his new film, 'A Monster Calls'.
“Obviously you don’t have real dinosaurs — sometimes you have people playing dinosaurs — but we love animatronics and we’re trying to do as much with them as possible, It’s complicated because the audience now is so used to seeing CGI that they’re sometimes reluctant towards animatronics, But at the same time, I think animatronics bring soul and reality to it. We’re trying to find the balance between animatronics and CGI in order to cheat the audience so they don’t know what they’re seeing."
Bayona's comments are very encouraging for the direction of the sequel. Jurassic World most notably only had one animatronic, that of the dying Apatosaur the protagonists encounter in the film. Bayona's comments indicate that he certainly intends to use more then one animatronic for the sequel.
The combination of animatronics and CGI that Bayona describes is another encouraging sign. It signifies that Bayona wants to bring out the depth of the dinosaurs, especially in his comments regarding soul and reality. Bayona went on to compare his view of animatronics as he used them in 'A Monster Calls':
It’s always important to have something real that you can act against, especially for the interactions by touch.”
It certainly seems that Bayona is intending for multiple animatronics, and to portray the dinosaurs as more then monsters. Is it possible we may see more complex interactions between humans and dinosaurs in the sequel, similar to the relationship between Owen and Blue?
Jurassic World 2 will be released on June 22, 2018. Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt will return to play Claire Dearing and Owen Grady in the film. Rafe Spall and Toby Jones will also star alongside Justice Smith. The movie will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who has directed 'The Impossible.
