Utahraptor skeletons measuring 20 ft or so have been found and their claws were about 10 -13 inches long. Just sayin. I have heard those reports of 30+ foot Utahraptors as well, but I dismissed them as being all that accurate.
ReplyRex Fan 684Dinosaurs ForumWhy T-Rex is betterJun 8, 2013
Granted, the hadrosaurs were the most populated.
T-rex probably hunted herbivores in this order-
Hadrosaurs
Ceratopcians
Sauropods
Ankylosaurs
I have Sauropods ahead of Ankylosaurs because, while much larger, they don't have that armor. Not to mention, if T-rex was a group hunter, they would have been able to bring down an Alamosaurus somewhat easily. Sustaining injury sure, but it's pretty much an accepted fact that Giganotosaurus hunted Argentinosaurus which was even larger than Alamosaurus. Why couldn't T-rex do the same with Argentinosaurus? Just sayin ;)

I was going to but there's so much controversy as to which was better than which that I wouldn't know if I should include Mauisaurus, Kronosaurus, Liopleurodon, Megalodon, Predator X, Basilosaurus, Monster of Aramberri, Shasatasaurus, Brygmophyseter, Livyatan or what, just like I had to choose Sarcosuchus over Deinosuchus and Purusaurus. Evidence at some university that is yet to be studied further puts Utahraptor at 30-35 feet, based on claws over a foot long.

It wasthe hadrosaurs that were the most populated though. So it wouldn't have to face the dangerous prey often. I get what you mean with tearing large chunks of meat, but the teeth were strong, thick and blunt, not serrated and thin like other predators, so they would still do a better job at crushing than other carnivores.
ReplyRex Fan 684Dinosaurs ForumWhy T-Rex is betterJun 8, 2013
If they were not designed for crushing bone, then why are there so many Tyrannosaurus bite marks on bones? Also, numerous Triceratops bones have been found with healed injuries from Tyrannosaurus showing they fought somewhat frequently. Alamosaurus and Ankylosaurus were probably off the menu except once and a while. T-rex was about as smart as a house cat which does make it extremely smart for a dinosaur. Far smarter than many reptiles for sure.

Not bad. I think Deinonycharius, doubt that's how you spell it, was actually very similar, but slightly smaller than, Therizinosaurus. I don't think Utahraptor could get to 40 ft though. 25 ft, max. Not a bad line-up. Surprised you don't have any marine predators though. Unless you count Sarcosuchus, which I don't.
ReplyMakaveli7Dinosaurs ForumWhy T-Rex is betterJun 8, 2013
They probably hunted in mated pairs with their young and the juveniles probably hunted in small packs. Doubt they would have hunted Ankylosaurs unless they were starving, rarely ceratopsians, and very very rarely, if ever, Alamosaurus. Not saying they weren't capable of killing large and dangerous prey, but their teeth were meant for tearing off big chunks of meat without falling out, contrary to belief that they were for crushing bone. While they were very smart by dinosaur standards, their intellectual equivalent today is a newborn kitten.
ReplyRex Fan 684Dinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
I always thought that myself. Long arms and strong jaws, together as one. They could be fighting and then a new predator, not sure what, shows up and they decide, alright, it's bad enough that there's us two, now this guy? Temporary truce is formed, and the new dino is as good as dead. Just a thought.
ReplyRex Fan 684Dinosaurs ForumWhy T-Rex is betterJun 8, 2013
T-rex did have binocular vision. There is a site either in Montana or S. Dakota that had a family of T-rex's which shows they were probably pack hunters. Tyrannosaurus was the most heavily muscled of the large theropods. It also had a septic bite like a komodo dragon. Finally, it was built for the kill. These dinosaurs would have been hunting giant hadrosaurs, deadly ceratopcians, armored ankylosaurs, and titanic Alamosaurus.
ReplyLord VaderDinosaurs ForumWhy i think Spinosaurus was the biggestJun 8, 2013
Rex Killer
I never remembered to say anything about your comment. I think Spino got real big not just to fight off other large carnivores but maybe to intimidate them (not saying Spino can't fight, between size, the sail, and possibly the ability to change the sail's colour, that probably would have been enough to intimidate a lot of creatures).
ReplyMakaveli7Dinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
I think a Spino-Rex alliance would be pretty awesome in JP4 to defeat the new villain.
ReplyRex Fan 684Dinosaurs ForumSpinosaurus vs RugopsJun 8, 2013
Hope you guys like the big Spino pic at the end of the fight
ReplyRex Fan 684Dinosaurs ForumWhy did Stegosaurus have plates?Jun 8, 2013
I think they were used for thermo-regulation. They could catch the suns rays or a cool breeze. They probably were full of blood. This meant they could have been for display as well. They were not for defense in the sense that they kept a predator from biting them. Say an Allosaurus bites one and breaks it. It would be like a big, blood filled cookie for him. The only way they could have been for defense is if they could change colors. That could frighten off some predators. Kind of like in Walking With Dinosaurs.
ReplyRex Fan 684Dinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
Great fight. Makes the dinosaurs seem more human like with the Suchomimus having a sense of vengeance. I love the Rex and Spino part. Strange animal friendships have been see before. Who says it could not happen with dinosaurs.
Replyfuturepaleontologist1Dinosaurs ForumWhy did Stegosaurus have plates?Jun 8, 2013
Right. I think that this could also help prove that some species were cold blooded.
Replyfuturepaleontologist1Dinosaurs ForumThe Vendian era EdiacaransJun 8, 2013
I think personally that the ediacarans were experimental. They don't fit all the requirements of animals, but they're not just cells. I think they were a mix of the two

That's cool. About time someone stopped choosing.
ReplyDinoFightsDinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
Actually, you can thank my son for that. I couldn't decide between Rex or Spino so I asked him and he said both.
ReplyCarnotitanDinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
Why did you do the Rex and Spino thing? Not opposed, just curious. Did you come up with it?
ReplyDinoFightsDinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
Like MrHappy said, I actually got the broken jaw idea from Dinosaur Revolution. I think it was a pretty good series.
ReplyPhilosiraptorDinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
I also think the T-Rex and Spino thing was cool. Amazing imagery and great story!
Replyx_paden_xDinosaurs ForumWhy did Stegosaurus have plates?Jun 8, 2013
Well they're not fully plates, they come from material that has bone in it, but they're not fully bone, Given they could be used for defence *so they're spine is some what protected form predators* I believe that they were used to help them, they'd act like solar panels and attach/gather some of the suns energy, Help warm the blood,*everybody likes to be warm :D*
OR something like that... They wouldn't have grown them for no reason... nature has shown this before you evolve these things for a reason... we need to find out what that reason is
Replyx_paden_xJurassic Park ForumThe JP BooksJun 8, 2013
The books were amazing *my mother keeps complaining ive read it too many times, but for an avid jp fan you tend to pick up little detail and such that you didn't know about before, in my case I've read both bout maybe... 43 times... altogether.... yeah...*
The books were so good i think that critchton was leading on with something, wanting to make a third book *SPOILERS* for we never learned what happened to all the dinos that got off the island, im thinking theres more then the juviniles on the boat in the book ... sadly i believe Universal beat him to it... Although the movie was his idea, i think a book would've been better...
ReplyLord VaderDinosaurs ForumSuchomimus vs AmpelosaurusJun 8, 2013
Why where Rex and Spino friends though? Maybe they grew up together without parents, or maybe they discovered just how effective they are together. That is beside the point. DinoFights is a great series. They are very entertaining and the talking afterward is fun too.
ReplyDinosaur.FanaticDinosaurs ForumWhy did Stegosaurus have plates?Jun 8, 2013
Right. It was the tail spikes that were used for defense, and they could do some serious damage. The plates were used for the tasks Makaveli7 mentioned.

Great fight! Suchomimus is a personal favorite, so thanks for giving him credit! He went from an abandoned juvenile to a powerful adult with a hopeful future.
And gotta love the Rex/Spino relationship slipped in there! Nice!

I've only read the first book so far, it's defintley way different than the movie, the characters are slightly different and yes, it is a lot more blood thirsty as well. I liked the story, I was a little disappointed though with what happened to Hammond at the end, being how I picture Richard Attenborough playing him from the movies but great nonetheless. Still have to read The Lost World though.
