The Hunting Grounds

The next day, we woke up. It was just after sunrise. I looked at Bryce. He was already awake.

"So, you ready to go?"

"I guess. Want the Desert Eagle or the 870?"

"870, easier to hit with, and I've never used a handgun."

"Sure thing."

We climbed down the tree and I handed Bryce the shotgun and some ammunition. He loaded the shotgun while I loaded the handgun and sniper. I slung the sniper over my back and cocked the handgun. We started walking after deciding who would walk in front.

I walked in front, and we made good progress. We reached the river in about an hour, and we quickly got a drink. After filling our canteens, we looked around. There weren't much signs of life. No birds chirping, no thumping, just the sounds of the creak and the wind blowing through the leaves. I figured a place as beautiful as this had to smell good too. I took a deep breath. Holy shit did it ever smell bad.

"You smell that too, eh Shag?"

"Yeah."

"Think it's us?"

"Wait a minute. Shut up and keep your eyes peeled."

I reached for the rifle on my back and shouldered it when I got it off. There was no way we smelled that bad. Sure, we hadn't bathed in a few days, but we didn't really move much. We didn't sweat, and our uniforms had just been washed. There was something around. I looked around, and I thought I saw the outline of something. I pointed at it, and Bryce nodded. He saw it too. He raised the shotgun, and I shook my head. I dialled the focus way down on the scope and took aim. The picture was blurry, but I saw the outline. I pulled the trigger, and the shape dropped. It went to its true colours.

"Carnotaurus. Isla Sorna's equivalent to the chameleon."

"I could have gotten it with the shotgun."

"No you couldn't have."

"Don't you trust me?"

"Two tons of predator that could charge at any moment, I didn't trust the shotgun. Now let's move. That gun shot may scare herbivores and some carnivores, but sooner or later, the predators are going to come back."

"Then why did you shoot?"

"To kill something that could have killed us. Now let's move."

We walked away from the river a couple hundred yards before continuing moving with the river. We watched the surrounding area closely, and Bryce pointed at something in the river. It was tall and thin.

"Shit, hide."

"Why?"

"Just do it."

We quickly crawled into some nearby bushes. I was watching it. Even from here, I could see the creature rising out of the water. My heart was pounding out of my chest. I tried to keep my breath steady.

"What do you see?"

"Shut up, please."

The creature, a Spinosaurus, turned and looked at the bush we were in. It started walking towards us. I told Bryce not to make a sound. He nodded, and we watched. The Spinosaurus stopped about ten feet away from us and looked around. It looked everywhere for the source of the sound, but it didn't find us. It started walking back to the river, and it was long gone before we crawled out of the bush.

"What the hell was that?"

"It was a Spinosaurus."

"What the hell is a Spinosaurus?"

"That thing. It's big and swims a lot. They're pretty dangerous, but not the most dangerous things we'll see."

"What's the most dangerous?"

"I'd have to say Tyrannosaurus Rex."

Bryce didn't answer, and we continued walking. We didn't talk, and we were careful where we stepped. We didn't make much sound, and we walked past a large tree. We stopped and I looked at it, thinking. I grabbed the first branch and pulled myself up. I continued climbing, and Bryce was right behind me. We climbed halfway up, and a mess of branches was off to the side. I swung over towards it. It was firm, surprisingly flat, rather large, and sheltered. It wasn't an ideal spot for using a bipod, but that was the end of its faults. Bryce swung over and asked what I was doing.

"I wanted a bird's eye view, and this tree was perfect. I was going to keep climbing, but I saw this spot. I wanted to check it out. Besides, look over there."

"Wow. I can see a small lake over there. How far is it?"

"If I had to guess, maybe six hundred yards."

"That bad?"

"No, actually, it's pretty good. Six hundred yards, from our height, seven hundred for shooting, I can score a kill from that distance. Predators are more likely to go to the lake than here, so we can rest easy at night. Climbing about hundred fifty feet and then a six hundred yard walk to get food isn't so bad."

"Sounds pretty good."

"It is. Let's set up here. I'm going to clean the rifle."

We set up some rubber we had brought with us, and then we sat down and I started to clean the Tac-50. Bryce was looking around and pointed at a Pteranodon that was flying overhead.

"They can be dangerous, but they're no match for a 12 gauge."

"Alright, I've got this."

"Don't. Only shoot them if they attack us. They're only skin and bone with a belly. You'd get more meat from a sheep."

"Alright."

Bryce continued looking around, and he saw something big. He pointed at it, but I wasn't paying attention.

"Shaggy, what's that?"

"What's what?"

"That thing by the lake."

I had just finished cleaning the rifle, so I put it back together and took aim. What I saw taking a drink was amazing.

"Tyrannosaurus Rex. One of three or four animals I'm not sure if this rifle can take out."

"That's a T-Rex? Let me see."

I handed Bryce the rifle. He scoped in on the Tyrannosaurus.

"Holy shit, that thing's huge. It looks like it could destroy a house."

"Easily. It's as big as a house."

"It's not that big."

"I know. Just the same, it's ten tons of hell with jaws to match."

"How strong is the thing's bite?"

"I've heard anywhere from three to twenty or more tons PSI. Probably eight or so PSI."

"Is that a lot?"

"How should I put this? Take a look at the lens on the scope, the one you look through, not the objective."

"Alright."

"Imagine eight tons of pressure being applied to that area."

"Holy shit."

"Yeah."

"Is that the only T-Rex on this island?"

"No, there's three or four."

"Why?"

"Maserani wanted to have a few extras in case the one at Jurassic World died. He wanted them to be friends per say, and released three or four in close proximity to each other."

"How'd that work?"

"Not very well. Two of them liked each other, but apparently the DNA was freakishly similar."

"So?"

"The scientists believe the two to be siblings. Go figure, eh? Four T-Rex's on this damn planet, with DNA taken from four different sources, and two of them are brother and sister."

"That's funny."

"Yeah, at least they aren't at each other's throats."

Jack of all trades. Master of none
