Carnosaur
MemberCompsognathusOct-07-2014 8:44 AMThis is really the year for dinosaur discoveries!
This latest one i present to you is a big hadrosaur from the late retaceous ofNorth Amera; Rhinorex condropus or "King nose"
This exciting find was unearthed in the 1990's, since then it's been poured over by a miriad of paleontologists. Rhinorex is unique in three different ways:
- It shows the diversity late cretaceous hadrosaurs began to show in North America, which is in turn evidence of a sucessfule dinosauria family
It didn't have a crest or any head orementation like Parasaurolophus, but instead sported a "big nose" which in all likelihood was used in interspecific communications.
- While we do have hadrosaurs of this same time period in North America, They're over two hundred miles away in another dig site; in another completely different habitat. It's been suggested Rhinorex in a different ecological niche, though that last part isn't for sure
What's more, is that this thing was big. ~ 10 meters in length, 4/5 tons in weight. Though the limb bones weren't recovered, something else of significance was discovered:skin impressions.
One of the lead authors on this beast, Terry Gates of North Carolina university had this to say:
"We had almost the entire skull, which was wonderful," Gates says, "but the preparation was very difficult. It took two years to dig the fossil out of the sandstone it was embedded in -- it was like digging a dinosaur skull out of a concrete driveway."
Nature doesn't deceive us; it is we who deceive ourselves.
