Concerning the "horror mouth" and "snake eater"

So the other day I was alerted to a bit of a kerfuffle here a while back, concerning two spinosaurs here that turned out to be fake.

This amused me, since I created both animals eight years ago.

I know it’s been a year since then, but I just thought I’d chime in and explain the real story behind the “horror mouth” and “snake eater” for anyone who might be interested. Both dinosaurs were created for Gondolend, a worldbuilding project I’ve been working on for the past fifteen years or so where humans and dinosaurs coexist. Neither has ever set foot in Africa, as Africa does not exist in this setting.

The Horrormouth

Cryonyx phoboris (horrormouthed frozen claw) is a fourteen-meter baryonychine spinosaur from Gondolend’s far north. Though its ancestors specialized in hunting polar hesperornithiformes, C. phoboris is more of a generalist hunter. Its large teeth were originally an adaptation for piercing through the thick feathers and insulating fat of their ancestors’ polar hesperornithinorme prey, but over the animals evolution they began pulling double duty in courtship displays. As individuals with the largest and most impressive dentition were selected for mating, they grew larger and larger until they finally reached the extreme size seen in the horrormouth today. As protection against the frigid polar winters when the sun disappears below the horizon for months at a time, the horrormouth is covered in a thick coat of brown feathers.

Another, smaller species of Cryonyx, C. borealis, hews more closely to the ancestral form and, like them, frequently preys upon hesperornithiformes.

The Elegant Snake-eater

Ophidiophagus elegans (elegant snake-eater) is a small, gracile irritatorine spinosaur from outside the area of Gondolend inhabited by humans. Because of this very little is known about the animal, and because the only one ever seen happened to be eating a snake at the time it was called Ophidiophagus; whether snakes make up a majority of its diet or whether it’s more of a generalist is anyone’s guess.

(I’ve actually recently had some new ideas about Ophidiophagus, so all of that is subject to change in the future.)

The images posted here were drawn by me in 2006, not Makaveli7 as he claimed.

I posted a write-up of my thoughts on the matter on my site. While Makaveli’s attempt to pass drawings I worked fairly hard on as his own rankles me quite a bit, I have to say I found the whole thing more amusing than anything.

Damn, just when I forgot about the incident too. Oh well, sh!t happens.

They certainly were interesting creatures to say the least, fake or not. Nice bit of information here that would have been nice to know several months ago.

Pretty nice information for fake creatures.

I remember reading what you put on Deviant Art about your species. That was after the whole "horror mouth hoax" was revealed. There good illustrations nonetheless.

Thanks, I'm rather fond of them myself. There's just something about the spinosaur skull plan that makes it a lot of fun to play around with.

GONDOLENDIAN - Welcome to the forum! The information you've provided is extremely interesting - your creativity and artistic capability are quite nice! I remember seeing the post concerning your work and felt that it was extremely compelling. As for that other bloke attempting to steal your work: you have my sincerest sympathies. The theft of intellectual property is in no way forgiveable. As a journalist, I can fully understand how terrible it is to have someone attempt to take your work. I can't change what that bloody fool did, but you have this girl's empathy. Regardless, I wanted to formally welcome you to the site! Please, enjoy yorself; we're always excited to see new faces and hear new ideas! :)

On your site, you asked about DinoFights sister. Just to clear that up, DinoFights was a member here and a real life friend to Makevli(after the Horrormouth, as it seems to be one word based on your site, incident, they stopped talking to each other. I've been talking to DinoFights myself via email). Anyways, his sister is a scientist that was going to take a trip to Africa. Said she'd keep on the lookout for any signs of the Horrormouth.

Hope that helps :)

PS- We'd love to have you on the forums as a regular member, but we understand if this is a bit of a one time thing.

If she did find any signs of it, I'd be pretty impressed. (And a little worried. Would that mean I inadvertently willed it into being by creating it? Am...am I...God?)

I'm still on the fence as to whether I want to hang around here or not. We shall see.

Well, your welcome if you want to.

PS- Left a comment on your site. Pretty professional looking, I'll say that :)

New members are alway appreciated. Me and Rex Fan have seen our fair share of members come and go over the year and a bit we've been here.

Some good, some bad.

Oh well, getting off topic and we don't wanna do that to a potential member :)

I'm glad you posted this thread.

That we do not. Conversation over.

That said, as Rex Fan said, thanks for posting this, it did bring some clarification to a topic I had completely forgot about but now remember better than my high school.

Wasn't here when that happened, so I don't have much input on the subject.

Welcome to the forumns though, and please enjoy your stay. (also, if you do stay, just avoid rex vs. spino, it's never ends well.)

Oh believe me, I know. I regularly posted on another Jurassic Park message board back when Jurassic Park III hit, and the debates that raged over that scene were the stuff of legend. I think if I tried to wade into one of those discussions nowadays I'd probably blow my blood vessels.

I could see why. We aren't complete assholes, and Rex vs Spino is pretty well done around here, so nothing to worry about from that.

Welcome to the forums. I wasn't on the forum back when all that happened, but this is still quite interesting.

I'm confused as to what just happened. Horrormouth? Africa? DinoFight's sister? WHA?!

Youre fat, and I'm not sugarcoating it cause you'd probably eat that too.
