A Risky Plan
Matt led his group toward the western part of the facility while the others went south east. Matt made sure his team checked every building they saw. Any phones or radios were not working. Eventually, Sarah noticed a large building a couple of yards away. At the back of it were a couple of generators. They were running. This building had power.
“Hey, I think this one has power,” she said.
Upon further inspection, Matt realized the building was being run on geothermal power. Hopefully, that meant anything inside did to. Upon entering, Matt noticed the lights were out. He flipped a light switch, but the lights only shimmered and then sparked. The place had power, but it wasn’t used in so long that if something was used, it could malfunction. Zach turned on a flashlight and the beam of light revealed a dusty old lobby. On the receptionist desk sat a phone.
“Eh, why not,” Zach said.
He walked over and picked up the phone, but only heard static.
“No good,” he said as he sat the phone down.
“Let’s try upstairs,” Matt suggested.
The group made their way to the nearest staircase and headed up. They passed a floor with some offices and cubicles. The ceiling was a simple drop tile ceiling. Matt assumed this is where the plant had their paperwork done. The computers and phones here weren’t working. Matt did notice an electrical box at one end of the floor. He walked over and opened it up. Some of the switches were off. He flipped some on and a computer nearby blinked to life.
“Score,” Matt said.
“I’m pretty good with computers,” Sarah offered.
She pulled up a seat and got to work. Zach went to the door and made sure it was locked. Matt watched as Sarah brought the old computer back to life. A few lines of code popped up and she hesitated for a moment. Then she managed to bypass the screen and move on.
Meanwhile, Zach kept an eye out. He had an uneasy feeling. As he looked out the window in the door, he saw the shadow of something coming up the stairs. The feathered dinosaur looked a little like the Pyroraptors from earlier, but smaller and it had two sickle claws on each foot. Zach calmly loaded his gun and turned to Matt.
“We got company,” he said simply.
Matt walked over and looked out the window. He frowned at the sight of the raptor. John had told him about these. Balaur. While not as big as the Pyroraptors, they’re still just as dangerous. The raptor sniffed the floor, then looked up at the window. Matt knew it was looking at them. The raptor let out a high pitched screech. After a minute or two, a couple more appeared at the top of the steps. One looked at the window, snarled, and leapt for it. His snout smashed through the glass, but was stuck. Blood dripped down the doorway as it struggled to free itself. Matt jammed his gun against the snout of the raptor and fired. The Balaur went limp and slipped out of the shattered window. The others hissed and flung themselves at the door.
“We don’t have much time. Try to contact someone so we can get out of here,” Matt yelled at Sarah.
“I think I’ve got an Internet connection now. I should be able to contact-,” but before she could finish, a raptor fell through the ceiling, smashing the computer. Sarah fell backwards as the raptor hissed at her. Zach leaped toward it, knocking it to the ground. The raptor snarled and latched on to Zachs shoulder. Zach screamed in pain, but the raptor wouldn’t let go. That is until Matt put a bullet through its skull. The raptor went limp and and Zach pushed it aside. Then he stared in horror at the foamy bite mark on his shoulder.
“I’ll hold them off so you two can escape. I’m as good as dead anyways,” Zach said flatly.
“I’m sorry Zach,” Matt said, pain clearly in his voice.
Matt and Sarah located the fire escape and made their way to it. Meanwhile, Zach loaded up and prepared to fire. If he was going down, he was taking as many of these damn raptors with him. They finally broke through the door and he dropped the first one he saw. His arm was starting to ache as the poison started to take effect. He kept shooting though. Sarah made her way down the steps as Matt looked back one more time.
“Don’t stop! Just go,” Zach yelled.
Matt did as he told and ran. Meanwhile, Zach found himself being buried alive by raptors. He never stopped shooting until his throat was ripped out.
