Primal Earths Volume 2: The Mesozoic Phenomenon E01
“Surviving before Thriving”
It’s the early Jurassic and dinosaur numbers have exploded after the extinction of the Synapsids and the Rauisuchians. There are even new forms of dinosaurs, and among them is Massospondylus, a 20-26 foot pro-sauropod that specializes on eating plants and will occasionally eat small insects. This individual in particular lives with a small group of his kin, they are currently residing in a large Amazon-like tropical forest with many forms of plants and animals, and they are now walking alongside a large river shore right in the middle of the forest. One of them stops for a drink, as the warm water of the tropics touches his throat he notices a strange taste in the water, he looks down and the water is filled with blood. The group instinctively run after such a sight…One of the larger individuals enters the forest and gets separated in a small clearing. Silence is all he can hear, there is something moving around in the shadows. The panicking animal is following the “whoosh” sound that is circling him, then…everything stops no sound. Suddenly a small 2 crested animal springs from the trees and starts biting and clawing at its large prey, and finally 6 other such animals land on the Massospondylus’s back and start ripping off chunks of flesh. The animal, Syntarsus is a 10 foot carnivorous pack hunter that is able to take down prey much larger than itself. The larger Massospondylus is able to shake them off, which gives him the chance to run away. With small and much faster creatures in toe, the Massospondylus has no idea what to do, but abruptly he falls down a small cliff, and so do the Syntarsus. He is able to make it back up to his feet and stand his ground, ready to use his 4 inch forelimb claw to decapitate his attackers, who are slowly closing in on the prey. A sub-adult is the first to attack, he starts biting the Massospondylus’s neck like crazy, but the larger animal quickly sends the animal’s head flying and starts walking away, but the hungry Syntarsus follow. He roars loudly and waves his claws in the air as sign that he’s not backing down, then suddenly the eager and snarling Syntarsus are startled and run away.
The proud and confident Massospondylus thinks that he scared away the Syntarsus, but he couldn’t be more wrong…he looks back and a large 23 foot long Carnivore is drooling over his head. The terrified Massospondylus roars in terror but is Decapitated mid-roar, the headless animal slowly slumps to the ground as his blood covers the forest floor like a red carpet. The terrifying predator, Dilophosaurus is the largest predator in the area weighing in at 1.5 tons and having 3-5 inch long teeth and claws. He slowly places his talons on his new kill, as if testing its softness, he then roars in victory and then lowers his head in order to start eating. The Syntarsus pack are now 1.5 miles away, far from the deadly Dilophosaurus. After they stop running they look at each other, they are still hungry, and they scan the terrain with their acute sense of smell. After a few seconds they quickly pick up the scent of an Anchisaurus a very close cousin to Massospondylus yet half the size. They follow the scent hiding between bushes in anticipation of finding their prey. They push the bush aside and look at their prey, but to their horror, the situation is in no way what they imagined, the Anchisaurus…is half-eaten. They feel some warm water on the back of their neck, they look up and they discover it’s….drool. A larger, stockier version of the Dilophosaurus is eating the carcass. It snaps its jaws shut on a small Syntarsus, breaking its spine in half which kills it instantly. The pack start running away from the menacing creature, Sinosaurus a 20 foot long 3 ton predator very similar to Dilophosaurus. They continue running only to bump into the Dilophosaurus once again, the beasts then see each other and stop, giving the Syntarsus time to escape. The beasts however start circling each other and snarling. The sun then fades into the horizon as it starts raining in the forest, the creatures can barely see each other from the lightning and clouds, and even the pack can’t see the pair of fighters.
By the time the sun rises, the aftermath of the battle has been revealed…The Dilophosaurus is dead from injuries such as a broken jaw and a snapped neck, while the Sinosaurus has suffered from a broken leg and is currently unconscious. He opens his eyes slowly and looks up towards the bright light of the sun, he then slowly stands up as he growls in pain, he then starts walking into the forest and disappears as fast as he appeared. The hiding Syntarsus then run up to the dead Dilophosaurus and start eating, their role has now turned from predator to scavenger. After they have finished their meal, they go and sleep in the shade as their meal starts to decompose and rot.
2 days later and the pack is just waking up, yet they are still sleepy….but out of nowhere a bloodcurdling roar can be heard from the forest. The roar was so strong it woke up every animal in the forest and scared every small one. The roar came from an animal that will soon take over the world, the roar came from….Megalosaurus.
Synatarsus:
Length: 7-12 feet
Height: 2-4 feet
Weight: 50-100 kg
Syntarsus is a small basal Theropod that was the raptor it’s day. It was in direct competition with Dilophosaurus but not Sinosaurus. Its known to have looked like a cross between a ceolophysis and a Dilophosaurus.
Dilophosaurus:
Length: 20-23 feet
Height: 9-11 feet
Weight: 0.88-1.4 tons
Dilophosaurus was a medium sized carnivore very closely related to dinosaurs like Sinosaurus and Cryolophosaurus. It may have had a strong tail and legs that allowed it to be more acrobatic than other dinosaurs of its size.
Sinosaurus:
Length: 20-23 feet
Height: 9-11 feet
Weight: 1.2-2tons
Sinosaurus was basically a larger more robust version of Dilophosaurus even having the double crest on its head. It had large knife like teeth and 4 fingers a sign of its primitiveness.
Massospondylus:
Length: 20 feet
Height: 10 feet
Weight: 2-3 tons
A small basal sauropod with a large thumb claw similar to that of Plateosaurus’s, Massospondylus is known to have been the forerunner to the sauropods that we know and love.
