The Kenyan Preserve
Kenya, 1985
A herd of elephants is getting a drink. They are making their annual migration following the rain. They are all in the water, except for the leader. He is an old male, almost sixty years old and and six tons in weight. There have been many attempts by different hunting parties to get the old male's tusks, but they all failed.
The herd is being watched by the alpha male's biggest threat that they will ever come across. It isn't a pack of hyenas, it isn't a cheetah, it isn't a group of Nile crocodiles, and it isn't even a pride of lions.
A hunting party is watching them. All three men are slowly creeping up on them. The group is inside one hundred yards from the herd, and the leader is getting closer. "Alright guys, now's our chance. He's right there, and he's got no idea we're here." "Then why are we getting closer?" "Speak a little quieter, will you? These things have an acute sense of hearing. They'll hear us before we get within fifty yards, so shut up." "Sorry."
The leader of the group went to the kneeling position. He held his breath as he brought his .458 Lott to his shoulder and took aim. He lined the crosshairs on his target, the elephant's left eardrum, and squeezed the trigger. The rifle went off, and the man stood up as he chambered the next round.
The elephant dropped. He didn't know what had hit him, and the rest of the herd scattered. The group walked over to the dead elephant, and the leader reached the elephant first. "I've heard stories of this elephant. Stories of how elusive he is, of his toughness. Guys, this creature has taken hundreds of bullets, he's killed fifty men, and he's wounded hundreds." "Then why did you take him out so easily? And why did you bring us knowing the danger we were in?" "Beats me. I've been told I'm the best hunter out there though." "By who?" "Everyone who has been hunting on this continent several times. The locals have told me, and so have other professional hunters." "I'll take it that's an honour." "Big time. To be told you're the best of the best on a continent is a big accomplishment. I've hunted about everything that can hunt you. I've taken anything from coyotes to grizzly bears." "Impressive."
The group took the tusks and called a helicopter to take the rest of the elephant. When the helicopter arrived, the group leader went over to the crew. "Good job Robert, I've heard the stories about this big guy too. Nice work." "Thanks. It took quite a bit of patience to take him out." "It takes patience for all theses animals here." "I know, but especially this one." "I can imagine. John wanted me to tell you that he wants to talk to you and he'll drop by sometime tomorrow." "Sounds good. Tell him that I'll be out in the field with theses two men tomorrow." "Sure thing Robert. See you later." "See you later too Mark."
