Dinosaur Writers Challenge: A Day in the Life of: Game Warden: Hamada
Much like any normal day on Isla Nublar, I woke up at 6:00 AM to the buzzing of my alarm clock. Today was a big day for Jurassic World. Today, John Hammond, the original owner of the island, was coming to visit.
I got ready for the day as I usually do. I took a shower, got dressed, and then had breakfast. It is now 6:30 AM. I don't have to clock in for another half hour. I walked around my room for a minute. It was the standard room given to park employees; a 20 x 20 room with a single bed, a couch, a television, a few chairs, and an amazing view of the sauropod paddock.
After watching the Sauropods for what I felt was maybe fifteen minutes, I checked my watch. It was 6:55 AM, ten minutes more than what I thought. I grabbed my keys, put on my boots and went to the visitor centre. The visitor centre is where all the staff signs in every morning, and that's where John Hammond would be.
I, and many of the other park staff, waited anxiously for Hammond's arrival. Hammond arrived at about 7:30, and all the staff wanted to hear what he had to say. Hammond didn't say much, but we understood why. He was old, and he had just arrived, so he wouldn't have been able to say much about the park.
After Hammond left, me and the rest of the staff went to work. I went to the Velociraptor paddock first. If there was one dinosaur I hated more than any in this park, it was the Velociraptors. They were fast, deadly, and smart, too smart. They haven't tasted fresh meat yet, only what's been killed. I remember a time when I was little. I had a pet snake and only fed it dead mice. I had friends over, and they wanted to see it kill something. I dropped a live mouse in with it, and the snake killed it. After that it would only eat live prey. I don't want the Velociraptors to do the same.
I reached the Velociraptor paddock, and they were still asleep. I climbed a flight if stairs to the walkway at the top. It was about forty feet high, ten feet out of their jumping range. I opened the plexiglass roof and started throwing down meat. They didn't wake up right away, but once I had thrown down about one hundred pounds, I closed the roof. One hundred pounds kept all three fed for a day or two.
When I finished at the Velociraptor paddock, I went to the garage. I started up my Jeep and drove around the park. The large predators were easier to feed. We just open a gate, a cow runs into the paddock, we close the gate, and the hunt begins. It's a violent death for the cow, but the dinosaurs need exercise. We found that some carnivores got lazy if the cattle was chained up.
It was the same, repetitive thing with all the large carnivores. Bring the Jeep to the gate, unlock the gate, walk in, press a button, scare the cow out, press a button, lock the gate, repeat with the next carnivore. Sometimes I wish there was a little excitement around the park, but then I remembered what would happen. That would involve an escape.
After I finished with the carnivores, I went back to my lodge for a break. The park opens at 9:00. The dinosaurs are usually up by then. All but that damned Tyrannosaurus. Usually, he sleeps until noon, leaves his cave, and walks around out of people's view so that he won't be seen. The only way people see him is if we feed him during the tour, so that's what we do. The only problem is that he doesn't like people, and he always rips the cow to pieces for everyone to see that he is powerful. Most people leave the area after his show, disgusted or disturbed.
Usually, the tour reached the Tyrannosaurus at noon, so I wouldn't need to do anything until noon. We had knocked the Tyrannosaur out four days ago, and he's expected to wake up today. I sat in my room and watched the security cameras. There was always something interesting going on.
At noon, the tour reached the Tyrannosaur, and he was awake. It must have been the thunder that woke him up. I heard him roar. It looked like he was about to roar again when I released the cow. Once the cow was released, I went to the tour guide. I started yelling at the tour guide.
"That's the third time this damn thing has done that!" The tour guide responded, "We haven't trained him yet. We've only had him for a month." " You'd think that knocking him out for four days would teach him a lesson." "Remember, that thing was brought from Sorna, it was free to do whatever it wished, and now, it's in an invisible prison, forced to a small area." "I know, but he's been here a few weeks and hasn't changed a bit." "It took three months for some of the carnivores." "Oh, yeah, I forgot that. I was just say- Do you hear that?" "Hear what?" "Listen."
I heard something strange over the rain. It sounded like creaking steel. I wasn't sure what was going on, but soon I heard plexiglass breaking. "Let's get out of here. Get on the PA and tell everyone to get inside." The tour guide did as he was instructed, and I rushed to one of the bunkers.
I got to the bunker, grabbed my keys, unlocked one of the vaults, and grabbed the laser guided M72 LAW and four tranquilizer rounds. I quickly found the Tyrannosaur after following the trail of destruction. Tents were destroyed, trees were knocked down, posts were bent out of shape, and the Tyrannosaur was attacking a wall. On the other side was the main walkway. This system was made in case of an escape. Not only was there a plexiglass paddock, but there was plexiglass around the area the paddock was in, just in case of an escape.
I wasn't sure what to do. I went to a spot where I had the best chance of escape, the exit on the opposite side. I didn't have a clear shot at a soft spot on the Tyrannosaur, so I whistled to get his attention. He turned around as I went to one knee, rocket on my shoulder, sighted on his neck. I pushed the button the set off the rocket, and it flew to where I aimed, the centre of his neck. He roared and charged, but he quickly started to slow down, and then he stopped, lied down, and fell asleep.
A crew quickly arrived and put the Tyrannosaur back in his paddock, and put the launcher away after cleaning it and drying it off. The hole in the paddock was repaired, and it was reinforced this time. I looked at my watch, it was 3:00. I went back to my room and took a nap. I had a busy day, and it was understandable that I take a break now.
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
