A DAY IN THE LIFE OF: : Ellis Fernandez – JW Worker

I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock. I rubbed my eyes, then stopped the alarm. I got out of bed ready for a normal days work. It was 5:45 AM. The sun slowly rose over Isla Nublar, I loved the early morning sun. I put on my red shirt, then my blue Jurassic World Staff Employee uniform, followed by my black boots. I looked in the mirror to make sure my face was clean, I brushed my teeth and ever so slightly trimmed the tip of my moustache. I packed my breakfast and other food for the day, grabbed my keys and bag and made for the front door. As I exited I grabbed my white worker hardhat and put on my head. I exited my room, room 37 of the park employee hotel, and was off. I saw a few others getting ready, some others already down the street. I picked an energy bar from my bag and ate it quickly.

I had been working this job for ten years. I loved my job, these creatures still amazed me. I was one of the first workers chose when the park opened in 2005. That was ten years ago, now, a whole new frontier had opened up. The public didn’t know, but a new genetically modified hybrid had been made. It was located in the forest, north of the park. That was where I was heading. I had been going there for quite some time. As a worker I did many things, build, clean, messages and the list went on. But as of recent I had been sent there to overlook the enclosure with some fellow workers. There was a dangerous encounter with the new beast, a worker nearly lost his arm. That was because we were told to hand feed it. What a stupid idea. These people never learned. I knew what happened at the first park, everyone did. But it was only a matter of time before someone died. No one had yet, and god forbid it will be me. I got on the employee bus and headed to Paddock 11.

It was now 10:30 AM I had been working for hours, our boss and the CEO of the whole park, Simon Masrani had just left. He was impressed by the new beast. I had great respect for him, but not for that animal. It looked to…evil…to sinister. It gave me a gloomy feel. The parks operation manager (who was in charge when Masrani was not present), Claire, was leaving to speak to a navy man named Owen Grady as instructed by Mr. Masrani. “Nick, keep this place safe and secure, I’ll be back.” She said to my boss and supervisor, who was also the Paddock 11 supervisor, Nick. Nick was a large man in his mid-thirties. He was on the heavy side, but still a great guy. He liked eating, and sometimes slacked off but was a nice guy to work with, and would get his hands dirty instead of handing the job to a subordinate. “Ellis, make sure no one comes through that door, okay?” Nick asked me, I assured him that I’d do my job.

It was now 11:45 AM and I saw Claire pull in with the navy man, Owen Grady, in her new Mercedes. She appeared to be having a discussion with him, getting a little annoyed. They ascended the stairs, “They’re dinosaurs, wow enough.” Owen said as he came through. They then argued over the hybrids name and pronunciation of other dinosaur names. Claire walked straight past me, as she did to anyone who wasn’t more superior to her. She was a nice woman, but she just seemed a little disconnected with everyone. Owen casually said “Hey.” I was glad he didn’t ignore me. I nodded at him. Claire signalled me to leave. I followed the orders and exited the doors and descended the stairs.

Moments later I was packed and ready for food, our recess break was just moments away. Then my radio went off, it was Nick. “Ellis I need you for a moment.” Damn! I was hungry! But he did seem serious. Claire stormed out of the room and down the stairs, stressed and panicked, she got in her Mercedes and drove full speed leaving a trail of dust. Something was up. “Ellis it’s important. We may have had a breach.” I was shocked.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be there.” I responded. The workers surely would of seen something, wouldn’t of they? Wait…they had been off to recess early, since the shift ended earlier. Crap! I was beginning to think of some crazy things. I exited the staff door into the paddock. I was in the paddock. It was the first time. Barely anyone had been in here. I walked over to the far side. I could see it. The scratch marks. I arrived at the wall. “What the hell?” I said to myself. She had scaled a forty foot wall. No one had noticed. I began scratching my head. Something was up. Something wasn’t right. I had this eerie feeling. I heard human footsteps approaching. It was Nick and Owen. They eventually got to me.

We all stood. Shocked. Had it really gotten out? Nick broke the silence “That walls forty feet high, you really think she could’ve climbed out?” Owen replied.

“Depends.”

“On what?”

“What kinda dinosaur they cooked up in that lab.” Owen stroked the claw marks. He knew something was wrong. We all did. Nick’s radio went off, but it was crackled up with static. I looked to Nick, Owen looked serious, he looked back. The static gave way and we heard Vivian, the young technician, she sounded scared and panicked. “Paddock 11 do you copy?” Owen looked as if he knew already. “Yeah, what’s the problem?” Nick answered.

“It’s in the cage! It’s in there with you!” We all jumped, we were scared shitless. We all turned, “Go!” Owen shouted. I ran a head, sweating madly. I looked to my right then to me left. It was in the somewhere in the bushes. It was in the cage. So were we. I ran, I knew Owen was close behind. I had no clue what Nick was doing. We ran straight and CRASH! A huge beast stomped out of the bushes in front of us. It slowly raised to its full height. Owen and I slowly looked up. It stared down at us with its blood read eyes. It had tricked us. It let out an ear-splitting roar. We both turned to run. We ran as fast as we could. I looked back. Fatal mistake. I screamed, I ran as fast as I could. I knew it wouldn’t stop the inevitable. Its hands stretched out and I felt it grab me and quickly drag me up into the air. I screamed, it crushed me in its grip killing my energy and leaving me limp. It pursued Owen. My radio hadbeen crushed, so the people in the control room would think I’m dead. Which I was. It crushed me even harder. I had worked here ten years, not a problem. Now I was going to be the first victim. All because of those people who wanted more teeth, greed and lust for money.  Bigger, louder, more teeth. I saw Nick open the large door and squeeze through, midway through he look back at me in horror. I felt my ribs break, it lifted me. It shoved me in its mouth. It chomped down. I felt the teeth rip through my skin, blood came up my throat. It bit down hard, it pulled my legs with its hand. I tried to scream through the pain. It ripped my leg off completely. It crunched down once. Then twice. Then blackness.
