Smiloraptor atrox
English translation: Frightening knifed robber
Length: 12-15 feet
Height: 5-6 feet
Weight: 220-300 lbs
If there was any dromaeosaur that most closely resembled the Velociraptors from the Jurassic Park, it is this monster. Smiloraptor was an incredibly fast, agile animal and a ferocious hunter, capable of reaching speeds of 40 miles an hour and jumping 15 feet straight up in the air. It is most closely related to Deinonychius antirrhopus, as they both had a common ancestor that originated in Asia. They also lived in the same time period (approximately 110 million years ago). But while Deinonychus lived in North America, Smiloraptor spread in the opposite direction into western Asia and across middle Europe.
These raptors were very noisy animals, using a variety of calls complex enough to be considered a structured “language”, very much like the Velociraptors depicted in Jurassic Park 3. They ranged from low growls and hisses to loud barks and yelps to horrifying screams. Calls were heard from an estimated 2 miles away.
They were pack hunters with a family life very similar to wolves, where a breeding pair headed a group of sub-adult, juvenile, and infant offspring. Smiloraptors were very caring guardians, where the older siblings helped care for the younger packmates as much as the mother and father did. They viciously protected their young and pack from outsiders, so much so that intruding raptors were sometimes killed to present a message to other intruders to stay away. Once an individual reached 3 years old, they were old enough to leave the pack to seek out a new territory and eventually a mate.
What makes these dromaeosaurs so different from their relatives were their 5th teeth on the upper jaw, which grew up to 3 inches long and were serrated. While not as massive as those of any of the 3 species of Smilodon (the sabre-toothed cat), they did grow back quickly, so if a sabre was lost, it didn’t impede the raptor’s chances of bringing down prey. Coupled with a heavily muscled neck (for a dromaeosaur), detachable jaws, and the typical dromaeosaur traits of long forelimbs and switch-blade talons on the 2nd toe, this is one dinosaur you don’t want to even get close to.

MemberCompsognathusSep-01-2015 1:15 PM@ GorillaGodzilla - i had never the intention to be rude, nor am i determined to win. I had latin in school for over 6 years, and i know that the word nequit means being unable to, and since people need a valuable ressource for every statement, i gave you some links! My only intention was to correct a mistake, no more no less.
@Sci-Fi King25 - I withdraw my submissions! There's no other way to prove, that this wasn't about talking other peoples work down, so that i may win.

MemberAllosaurusSep-01-2015 6:17 PM^It's quite alright DestoroyahX, I may have exaggerated the situation a bit.
Good grief.

MemberAllosaurusJul-03-2017 7:13 PMLate but why tf not.
Type: Dinosaur
Family: Therizinosauridae
Name: Gladiocheirus montanaensis
Said: Glad-ee-oh-kai-rus mon-tan-uh-en-sis
Meaning: Sword claw of Montana (Latin)
Origin: Herd of Therizinosaurus cheloniformis crossing a land-bridge from Asia to North America while being chased by a pack of Tarbosaurus bataar. In N. America, they were forced to evolve to counter T.bataar's more famous cousin, Tyrannosaurus rex; as the teeth grew in size, so did the claws. Gladiocheirus montanaensis sports massive arms, each of which has three claws the size of fully grown men (5'8"). To put it in perspective, here is a size comparison between (from left to right) Homo sapiens, Tyrannosaurus rex, Gladiocheirus montanaensis, Tarbosaurus bataar, and Therizinosaurus cheloniformis:
Cause of Extinction: KT Extinction
