AdminTyrannosaurus RexJun-03-2015 10:20 AMNot a very diverse range of opinions, so take it for what it's worth. It sounds like a "good not great" film, but worth seeing of course.
One person called it the best Jurassic Park sequel of the three movies released after the original, but someone else called it on par with JP3. More as it comes, but here's the article:

MemberCompsognathusJun-03-2015 11:03 AMStill waiting for the early critic reviews, but good to see some pretty positive reactions. Any idea when the early reviews come in?
As a side note, this Is the first time I've seen you in the JW forum.

MemberCompsognathusJun-03-2015 12:07 PMIt's nice to see all those positive reviews. I really hope that it does turn out to be a worthy sequel. It is mentioned in the article that the guy who said it was on par with JP3 disliked the idea of the film from the very beginning and that he was 1 out of 4. So 3 out of 4 people enjoyed watching the film while 4th guy sort of forced himself to watch it. He probably won't be the only one, but so far he seems to be a part of the minority much like there is a minority that dislikes the very first film.

MemberCompsognathusJun-03-2015 1:22 PMOnly one negative reaction. I'm not affected by it. Seems like a great sequel to me.

MemberCompsognathusJun-03-2015 2:05 PMI don't understand why you say: "good, but not great sequel" Out of those 8 reviews posted, one was negative. Sounds pretty great to me.

AdminTyrannosaurus RexJun-03-2015 3:42 PMDinozilla,
I visit here off and on. Official reviews normally start spilling in the week of the release, so I actually expect to see some over the weekend, but the review embargo likely doesn't lift until Monday.
Siks,
Technically two negative reactions depending on how you look at it. The 1 guy out of the 4 that didn't like it was someone different than the person who said it was on par with JP3. But even then that assumes the person who said it didn't like JP3. Remember, there's still a hefty amount of people out there that like the movie.
PrimalKing,
Just a realistic prediction and being cautiously optimistic. Even the good reviews are careful not to call it the best Jurassic Park movie, which of course wasn't going to happen anyway, but normally rabid fan(boy) reaction can have that affect. Granted it's a small pool to pull from though. And as I clarified above there may be 1-2 negative reactions out of it depending on how you look at the JP3 comment. Still good though-- It's not going to be a hit with everyone.
Overall this is nothing but early buzz. No official reviews, but it's nice to have some sort of indication of how audiences might react to it. Personally, as long as it's a fun movie I doubt I'll have too many qualms.

MemberCompsognathusJun-03-2015 4:45 PMGman2887,
Makes sense. I'll be checking for them around the weekend. Curious, what is your opinion on the first Jurassic Park?
Everyone else,
I think Gman is right, I think it will be a pretty good sequel, probably better than the third movie, but not the the best Jurassic Park film.
Anyone who was on the Godzilla forums during the hype for the 2014 film know that Gman nailed it, a lot of people, even myself at one point, was expecting (or hoping) for it to be the best Godzilla movie ever, and Gman was one of the only people who had much more realistic expectations. It was a good movie and I really liked it, but it definitely wasn't better than ALL of the original films.
I expect Jurassic World will go the same way.

AdminTyrannosaurus RexJun-03-2015 9:22 PMKind of you to say Dinozilla. And I agree. I think Jurassic World will be some good fun, but I can't see it being a "great" film. It doesn't have to be "great" to enjoy, just a solid, worthwhile effort. I really, really dug Godzilla '14. It's one of my favorite movies from last year, but it's not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination and certainly not a top 10 Godzilla film. It is, however, a solid, worthwhile endeavor.
Now, to answer your question, the original Jurassic Park is a great movie. I see Jurassic Park as one of those untouchable films and revere it in a similar fashion as the original Godzilla. Both were products of a time which kickstarted a new era in film for their specific countries. And both have a lot to say.
Granted, Jurassic Park isn't perfect (hello terrible editing), but it's that (now) rare summer blockbuster that effortlessly and seamlessly blended cutting edge effects with lovable characters in far fetched situations without sacrificing intelligence. Most blockbusters can't hit anywhere close to that perfect blend and use special effects tools solely for action/style over emotion. But then Jurassic Park is a classic.
An example is when the main cast sees the Brachiosaurus during the film's first act. It's my favorite part of the entire movie-- It's beautiful. The faces of the gasping characters mirrored our own reactions at the (then) newly unveiled special effects. It was a brief reflexive moment heavily boosted by Williams' score which, to this day, is my favorite of his work. All the pieces were in perfect sync in this scene.
Scenes like that are why I don't think any sequel will touch the original, but that's okay. Like the Godzilla series I think the Jurassic Park series should continue with an emphasis on fun with a little crazy thrown in. Jurassic World seems to be going down that path; it will likely polarize some people and not be considered a classic, but I hope it'll be a lot of fun.

I usually don't trust imdb as far as I could throw them (presumably a long, long way), but I figured this was at least well-articulated enough to be worth posting, just in case it's the real deal.

MemberCompsognathusJun-08-2015 12:51 AMIf I were to be completely honest, I don't believe it looks very good.
The story of Jurassic Park was never about the dinosaurs. They were the device for a much larger theme, which revolves around the hubris of science which leaps before it looks.
This one seems to travel the coattails of that notion, but it seems to boil it down to dinosaurs and explosions. In the first film, and in the original novel, the dinosaurs were minor to the characters and ideas being presented. Since then, the film franchise has slowly deteriorate into action-film tropes, where the dinosaurs become the stars of the film rather than the device for the human characters to learn lessons about their own nature.
And now, it seems, we welcome such dilution because we've forgotten the importance of story over gimmick.

AdminTyrannosaurus RexJun-08-2015 12:51 PM^Maybe. In the Colin Trevorrow's defense, he's mentioned some clever ways that the seque draws reflexive parallels with the state of blockbusters today. Part of what you're saying may in fact be the point-- But it's all in how it will be handled.
Like I said previously, I'm hoping for a fun movie with some minor social commentary. That'll be enough to keep the franchise afloat and most fans reasonably happy. That's said, I'm still expecting a violent divide amongst some of the fandom's more vocal members.

AdminTyrannosaurus RexJun-08-2015 8:15 PMA writer for the South China Morning Post seems to have broken the embargo and delivered the first review:
Film review: Jurassic World -- dinosaurs return, bigger than ever
It's not a very well written or in-depth review, but it is quite positive. I haven't looked into SCMP's track record for movie reviews so I can't speak for how on point he is. Enjoy anyway.
