Part 4

The I-Rex

About three months after Shadow hatched, Owen decided it was time he was introduced to the I-Rex. Shadow could already take orders like sit, stay and roll over. Most of employees thought it was cool as did guests who saw him. Sometimes, Owen put on shows for the tourists. Shadow knew humans weren't bad, so he trusted them and had no intention to harm anyone. Shadow is about four feet tall and twelve feet long. He weighs close to 800 pounds.

Owen walked outside, and Shadow followed. Owen went down a road that goes to the I-Rex paddock. Shadow stopped before he stepped on the road. Owen turned around and saw Shadow standing still.

"Come on. I know you've never been down here, but it's safe. You'll be fine."

There was no response from Shadow.

"Shadow, come."

Shadow looked at the road, and then at Owen. He obeyed.

"Good boy, now let's go. I've got someone for you to meet."

Shadow followed Owen down the road, and they went past the T-Rex paddock. Shadow saw the adult Tyrannosaurs, and he walked up to the glass. The adults saw him, and they walked over to investigate. Owen saw Shadow was looking at the adults, and he stopped to watch. The Tyrannosaurs stared at each other for several minutes. The adults were curious about Shadow's colour, and Shadow was curious about their size. Shadow hoped he could grow that big one day. The Tyrannosaurs all tried to bump snouts, but the plexiglass barrier stopped them. They all nodded instead.

"Alright Shadow, come. You can visit later."

Shadow walked towards Owen and stood at his side.

"You ready?"

Shadow understand the question, and he nodded his head.

"Alright, then let's go."

Shadow and Owen continued walking down the path until they reached their target. They were standing at the entrance of the Indominus Rex paddock. They walked in and went to the viewing platform. Shadow saw the I-Rex, and he snarled at it.

"Shadow, you don't even know where she is."

Shadow looked at Owen, then back where he had been looking. Some tourists were there too, and they asked Owen why Shadow seemed agitated.

"Probably something to do with the I-Rex. He doesn't know where she is, but he can sense her."

"I wish I could sense her. I've been here for ten minutes and the thing still hasn't showed up."

"Well, I've got something to show you."

"Let's see it."

"Alright. Shadow, stay here. Follow me sir."

Shadow stayed where he was standing, staring at one spot in the paddock.

"Now sir, if you press this button, you'll get a thermal of this whole building."

The man pushed the button, and on the screen, there was an overhead thermal view of the building.

"Cool. Is this the I-Rex?" The man said, pointing at one spot in the screen.

"Yes it is. And here we are, here's Shadow, and here's some other guests."

"I think Shadow is staring right at the I-Rex."

"I think so too."

Owen walked back out to Shadow. Shadow was still agitated, and still looking at one spot. Owen looked where Shadow was looking, and he saw the outline.

"Good eye Shadow."

Shadow looked at Owen, and Owen rubbed his head. At that moment, the I-Rex charged. It hit the glass with a bang, and then stepped back. Shadow had jumped a little, and then looked at the I-Rex and snarled. The I-Rex snarled back. Shadow was undeterred by the intimidation attempt.

"Shadow, that's enough. Let's go."

Shadow listened to Owen's command. He walked away with Owen, but didn't lose sight of the I-Rex until they were out of the building.

"So Shadow, you like her?"

Shadow looked at Owen and tilted his head, giving him an "are you serious?" look. Shadow shook his head no.

"Good."
