Maybe. It's kind of under-wraps. I'll decide.

I guess Dr Bakker was right.  Utahraptor was a social creature, just as I had hoped and envisioned since I heard the name!

Actually, guys, we're not so sure. it could have been a predator trap. With individuals going to the same spot and getting sucked into the quick sand.

No, they would try to avoid each other normally and thus is no exceptio.

Show me a live Utahraptor pride and a study on their behavior. Then we'll talk If lions are cannibals, so could be Utahraptor.

^^ how accurate is that? many large reptiles are gregarious and often group in large numbers. same goes for birds -- particularly of the  raptorial variety. even if utahraptors aren't cooperatively hunting i think it's a far stretch to state they'd just avoid each other.

Nature doesn't deceive us; it is we who deceive ourselves.

ya, this is proof for pack hunting.

thos is proof for pack hunting AND family hunting as seen by the adult utahraptor with babies.

And show me a study of mass utahraptor canninablism.

The comments in the article on the build of Utahraptor's body was also interesting. PK, know anything about their build?

I sorta do.

TK, my point isn't mass-cannibalism. You are stating it as a fact, when it's highly possible they were trying to cannibalize each other. So don't go around saying "first conclusions are obvious facts." They could be a family group, but they could be a cannibalistic loner-stock pile. That's what the osteogeneticists will uncover. (They will try and determine if they are related through the bones.)

@ Noah, Yes! They were very heavily built. Pretty stocky, but with longer legs than average for such a build. they have tremendously large eye sockets and olfactory bulbs, so we know they relied on sight and scent more than hearing. Also, their skull was long and yet sort of tall. Ironically, it reminded me of the JP Velociraptors. :?

Oh, ok so al 6 or 9 of these utahraptors were kiling and hunting each othe?

you say your point isn't to state mass cannibilism but that is exactly what you are doin.

Btw, we have no evidence of feathers. the preservation is extremely good, so we expect to see skin imprints. In fact, I believe I have seen indicators of small pebbly scales. :/

There are only 5. Maybe 6 if there is another juvenile. I have actually SEEN some of the bones, TK. So yes, it is possible these predators were attracted to each other the more that got trapped.

There is said to be possibly many more inside.

and they were not eating each other.

I am asking, please. STOP stating things that aren't facts as facts. I honestly have no idea. BUt as I prep the piece, I will continue to make discoveries, as will the team. And the block is abou 10'x11'. So there is for sure not another juvenile-to-adult sized raptor in there. the most we will find is another juvenile.

Also, Then why was the baby found with bite marks?

I am making assumption!!!!

and s are you. I say there pack hunters, you say there higly cannibilistic.

and I think it was from the iguanodont that was found along side it.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that we simply find out ourselves. I personally believe the same thing as you, that it was a family group. Just don't go around statingfacts that we don't know. Assumptions aren't fact. i know you understand that, but you are treating this like fact.

As for the iguanadont, it was a Hippodraco.

Oh my god. You agree with me!?!?!? Then why are we having this debate in the first place? I am only stating my opinion but you are taking it as a fact. Let's call this debate a draw.

you did great.

hippodraco. That sounds awesome.

Yes, I do. I thought you were trying to say it was a fact, but the bones will decide that. ;)

And it's very cool. Means horse dragon. Based offf

PRIMAL KING - It is absolutely amazing that you have the chance to work with these fossils! I am so very pleased for you! Please, let us know what you uncover if you have the time and are given leave to divulge information; it would be incredibly neat to hear what insights you glean from the material! :)

I agree with PK there. This block may suggest that Utahraptor hunted in packs, but there are many other possibilities. Just look at this Cau's post:

User Avatar

Yes. I strongly believe that there will be skin impressions hidden in the rock. I even believe I have seen indicators of small, pebbly scales. :3
