Why I think The Lost World is better than Jurassic Park

MemberAllosaurusDec-15-2014 5:18 PMUpdate on March 1st, 2016: I have since changed my opinion, and would like to state my official opinion is that Jurassic Park is better than The Lost World, but that I still enjoy them the same. However I will leave the topic as it is for those still interested in reading and discussing.
Okay I have briefly said it before but this time I wanted to make a full topic adressing this. I generally enjoy The Lost World: Jurassic Park more than it's predecesor, Jurassic Park.
Now I have seen extremely few people who agree with me on this. Only people I've seen agree with me so far is Sci-FiKing-25 and some random reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes. (It's a popular review site for those of you who don't know.)
Well anyway- why do I enjoy The Lost World more? I am going to list some of the many reasons below, I hope mayeb some of you might agree with me!
1- The Lost World had a darker atmosphere
One of the reasons I enjoyed the Lost World more is the fact that it had a much darker atmosphere. As most everyone knows Jurassic Park was adapted so kids could enjoy the film as well. (If it showed the deaths more it would easily have been R-rated rather than PG-13). The film is not soley for kids, it was just made for the whole family to watch.
And they did well on that, when I watched it as a kid I wasn't at all scared of it along with everyone else I know.
Then there is The Lost World... One of the reasons I enjoyed it more is that it didn't necessarily fully leave the more "gentle" atmosphere Jurassic Park had, this time, it was much darker and straightforward. As a kid some parts spooked me out.
I also liked how we got to see the dirty little secrets behind Jurassic Park. Sure it didn't go into the direction the book did but it was still cool to see the dark secrets of InGen.
2- Had characters I liked more
In the Lost World there were much more characters that I enjoyed more than the first one. First off Ian Malcolm is now the star of the show, which made me happy since he is my favorite character. Then there is Sarah Harding, and she is a very good character and actor. The character she played was awesome! We also got Nick, which I liked. Then we have a new Safari Hunter in place fo Muldoon, whose name was Roland Tembo. And although he was the villain, I liked the acting of Peter Ludlow. (The ACTING, not the character.)
3- Cooler and Nastier Dinosaur Deaths
I thought the death scenes in The Lost World were far more btter and captivating than the first film. I mean come on, an angry Mommy and Daddy T-Rex attacking the trailer because they want their little child! A rampage of compies brutally killing a pshycopath(Ouch)! Raptors storlling through tall grass killing everyone standing in And Then There Were None style! And then angry Daddy Rex going apeshit all over San Diego!!! Also the scene where
Do you get my point, people!!!???
Well anyway those are the main reasons of why I enjoy The Lost World over Jurassic Park.
Please do leave a reply! I love to hear your thoughts whether it be to agree or to disagree! But please let's do this in a clam manner; this is just a discussion over which movie you think is better. This is just my opinion.

MemberAllosaurusDec-19-2014 12:12 PM^I still don't know what to count TLBT as. Some parts were nice, children-friendly films. Then we get further into the movie. It goes down and down and then you get to the second to last scene right before they reach the Great Vally and you get some dinosaur spirit's heart lighting the valley. BOOM! A dinosaur film turned really deep.

MemberCompsognathusJun-16-2015 3:30 PMI agree with you! I loved Jurassic Park when it came out. I was only 6 years old, and didn't get scared at all. When The Lost World came, I didn't get scared either, but I found it much more exciting. The action scenes were much more tense. For me, the best scene of the entire trilogy was the trailer scene. Jesus Christ, that was awesome! One of the best action scenes of history! I like The Lost World a little more than the first Jurassic Park, and Jurassic park 3 a lot less than these two others. I haven't seen Jurassic World yet, but I'll see it tomorrow and I really hope to see the T.Rex more. One of the reasons I found the third movie bad was the fact that the T.Rex gets killed right after we get to see him. How could they just kill the main star of Jurassic Park and The Lost World? If the T.Rex doesn't get the appropriate attention on the fourth movie, I'll certainly not enjoy it as much as the first and the second.
In my opinion:
JURASSIC PARK - A theme park. Death scenes, tension, danger, but it's obviously more suitable for children.
THE LOST WORLD - Forget the theme park. Let's get wild instead! More blood, more tension, more action. Much marker. And... TWO T.REXES! That's awesome!
JURASSIC PARK III - T.Rex gets killed at the very beginning and we have a new dinosaur instead. The movie is too short for someone to be even able to evaluate it.
I hope JURASSIC WORLD gives T.Rex the spotlight again!

AdminTyrannosaurus RexJun-16-2015 6:11 PMI think The Lost World is a better film simply due to the successful story scale it accomplished and the maturity it has in its filmmaking-- Not necessarily its material.
Yes it's a bit long and drags at some moments, but it makes up for it with expertly designed thrills that don't always include dinosaurs. One thing I really loved about Spielberg's Jurassic Park movies was the sense of grating danger even when dinosaurs aren't onscreen. For example, Sarah's scene with the glass cracking under her is likely the most suspenseful moments in the entire film. Not a single dinosaur is onscreen during that.
I was largely more attatched to the characters than I was in Jurassic World, but much of that had to do with Ian Malcolm. He was already beloved in Jurassic Park and became an excellent through line to enjoy other characters. (Especially Nick van Owen. Can you imagine what Vince Vaughn's career would look like today without this movie?) Meanwhile, Roland became one of the most enjoyable and, by extension, interesting characters in the film-- I felt his arc was cut too soon and wish he and Nick were around for the San Diego attack.
Now I fully admit the San Diego arc was completely unnecessary and horribly omitted the majority of the film's key players, but looking back on it gave us something this franchise needs more of: Dinosaurs OFF the island. If this is just a taste of what that's like, we need more of it. The danger, thrills and suspense can really be enhanced by giving us a world where the dinosaurs have taken over the mainland.
The Lost World is sadmittedly pretty flawed, but it's a more seasoned movie than the following sequels. It also has an epic feel that Jurassic Park 3 doesn't and was somewhat forced in Jurassic World. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a competent, enjoyable sequel I believe to be the best crafted of the follow-ups.

AdminTyrannosaurus RexMar-01-2016 7:19 PMLooking back on this I had misread the thread. I thought this was how the original poster thought The Lost World was better than Jurassic World. (It is.)
While I don't think The Lost World is better than Jurassic Park, I think it's easily the best sequel to the original.

MemberAllosaurusMar-01-2016 7:24 PMWell The Lost World is better than Jurassic World in my opinion. If you check my update, you can see I changed my opinion.

MemberAllosaurusApr-01-2016 1:43 PMGood reasons, but don't forget to factor in the flaws. I love TLW, screw the haters.

MemberAllosaurusApr-02-2016 9:13 PMIt does have many flaws. All the people I know that hate The Lost World thought Jurassic World was better than the original Jurassic Park... Which just had me at a loss for words.

MemberAllosaurusApr-03-2016 2:43 PMIt really is. I mean I liked the movie, and I can slightly understand why someone would argue it's the best sequel even though I disagree, but to argue this flawed movie is better than Spielberg's masterpiece is nonsensical to me. SOme guy even thinks Jurassic World was more realistic than Jurassic Park in special effects, and I was baffled. Jurassic World did have some amazing CGI for the final battle while the rest was obviosuly CGI, at times painfully obvious. (It was painful to see it when compared to the original CGI and robotic dinosaurs.)

MemberAllosaurusApr-03-2016 4:33 PMThe first movie's special effects felt like something I could touch. TLW had the best special effects out of all of them.

MemberAllosaurusApr-03-2016 6:02 PMThe thing was since they built robots for the first movie, it was something you could touch at many scenes. The added CGI gave the robots real life. The Lost World did imporve the effects, the amazing thing is Jurassic Park still looks real. It doesn't just look realistic, it simply looks real.
And then the pteosaurs in Jurassic World were awful... Just awful.

MemberAllosaurusApr-16-2016 7:26 AMThe first two movies' effects still hold up today. I love both JP and TLW the same.
