One way to measure intelligence is using the EQ scale. This scale runs up to 8. How do dinosaurs stack up against some modern animals? Let's see...

Humans- 7.4-7.8

Dolphins- 4.14-5.3

Dromaeosaurs/Troodonts- 4-5

Chimps- 2.2-2.5

Elephants- 1.13-2.36

Tyrannosaurus- 1-1.5

Rat- .4

Plateosaurus- .2

Hmm, dinosaurs seem to really hold their own. T.rex matches up pretty close to elephants which are generally regarded as some of the smartest animals on the planet. Then again, Plateosaurus is pretty stupid, haha. But seriously, dinosaurs were smarter than many give them credit for...

Wow! Very interesting. I wonder where Spinosaurus would fit on this scale?

I'd probably put it at around .8-1. It is one of the more advanced spinosaurs after all.

So it was right under Rex then. Still pretty smart for a dinosaur.

I'd say most of the advanced carnosaurs were just under the tyrannosaur mark. Tyrannosaurs were probably around 1-1.5 while advanced carnosaurs were around .7-1.

I never knew Troodontids and Dromaeosaurs were as intelligent as Dolphins, I mean I knew they were smart, but not that smart. I also never thought T. Rex would be that smart. So much for dinosaurs being dumb.

What about Homo Erectus? I know that their brain size was about 2/3 of ours, so sort of in-between us and a chimpanzee.

Where are those values taken from? I have a hard time believing dromaeosaurids and troodontids would be smarter than chimps. Studies suggest their intelligence being at the level of a wolf, thing that would help them in social packs.

Very interesting, but I do have the same doubts as Dinosteve about the intelligence of Troodontids and Dromaeosaurs, everything else though I can perfectly see happening.

Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common. The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in. -Brom-

To define EQ...

Encephalization Quotient (EQ), or encephalization level is a measure of relative brain size defined as the ratio between actual brain mass and predicted brain mass for an animal of a given size, which is hypothesized to be a rough estimate of the intelligence or cognitionof the animal.

I know what EQ means, I'm just wondering where are those EQ values coming from? Guesses? Speculations? Actual studies?

It seems really unbelievable for troodontids to have such an intelligence level. They were smart for dinosaurs, yes, but not that much.

Educated guess and studies. They can take the brain cases from the skulls of dinosaurs and go from there.

Interesting... do you think you could link me some scientific papers or articles about raptors intelligence? :D

I can try. The sources I found were an online database at school, so I don't know if that'll work. If you can access the same database, it might work.
