MemberCompsognathusOct-26-2014 6:03 PMI'd like to thank rex fan for this:)
allosaurids had skulls that had eyes on the side of there heads which means that it had monocular vision and could only see larger objects. They were sauropod slayers which means that they hunted them for a living and you don't need binocular vidicon tk spot a 80 ton animal. So it was not nearly as much of a necessity for them, though they do have it to some extant since ALL carnivores have it, just some more then others. Do u think that to make up for the lack of sighting skills. i suspect all of allosauridua had extraordinary sense of smell to make up for it. And before you say all theropod had a great sense of smell and t.rex had the best sense of smell( cough cough REX FAN,). I will say I agree with the first statement of theropods having a good sense of smell.i say that allosaurids had a slightly better sense of smell then tyrranosaurs because apparently if an animal has one bad sense it would have a excellent second sense in return.and tyrranosaurus had binocular vision and a crazy good nose But supposedly has poor other senses. And allosaurs had "bad" sight but great smell. We are sure rex had a good smell because we can see it had a large olfactory bulb in its brain. But we haven't done the same sort of studies so we dont know who has the better sense of smell. This is honest to god my opinion.

MemberCompsognathusOct-26-2014 6:09 PMIt seems all theropods had a good sense of smell(T.rex having the best), so yes, allosaurs had a good sense of smell.

MemberCompsognathusOct-26-2014 6:15 PMI agree with Rex Fan, all Non-Avian theropods had a good sense of smell, but Tyrannosaurs had the best.
There is no such thing as a pure predator. A meat-eater is eit

MemberTriceratopsOct-26-2014 7:12 PMAll carnivorous theropods had great senses of smell, and anyway, if an allosaur had a very good sense of smell but not as good as a T-rex, it wouldn't really mater to it since their senses of smell were much better than ours.
And T-rex not only had great eye sight and a nose that was better than a hundred blood hounds. It could hear very well too, to the point of a hypothesis being proposed that it could use infrasound to echo-locate and communicate, like elephants and alligators, based on the inner ear structure of several skulls. It also makes sense since there would be a lot of padding on the bottom of their toes, so that they could feel the vibrations.
But I wouldn't be surprised that Allosaurus had the ability to use infrasound, especially the larger species/genera.

MemberCompsognathusOct-26-2014 11:35 PMIt's common for predators to have sharp senses, otherwise hunt would be even harder. So yes, allosaurids along with many other theropods would have a good sense of smell.
