FIGHT!
A huge female Mosasaurus heads for the surface. Taking in a big gulp of air, she descends back the depths. She has recently eaten and isn’t in the mood for doing much of anything. Right now, she’s just enjoying life.
For another giant predator, life isn’t so laidback. A large bull Basilosaurus is under stress. It’s the mating season for the carnivorous whale. He’s having a hard time impressing the females. Suddenly, a new scent drifts into his nostrils. The scent of another large predator. Taking out a big and dangerous carnivore might just earn the respect of the females and help him to keep his rivals away. The bull speeds off in the direction of the female mosasaur.
The female casually glances behind her to see if anything’s behind her. She’s caught off guard when she notices a charging Basilosaurus. His aggressive demeanor has her immediately concerned. She turns to face the incoming bull head on. Seeing that he’s been spotted, the whale stops short. He doesn’t wanna run straight into the open jaws of an angry mosasaur. The Mosasaurus flashes her teeth in an attempt to ward off an attack. The bull won’t have any of it. He stays put, ready to fight.
The Mosasaurus is not sure why the whale’s attacking, so she allows him to make the first move. The whale lunges forward, but stops short. He does it again. The Basilosaurus may be smarter than the Mosasaurus, but she knows a mock charge when she sees one. When he lunges again, so does she. Her strong jaws close on his snout and she rips it open. The whale backs off, blood pouring from his torn open nose. The second her teeth sliced through his flesh, the whale is already doomed. Even if he defeats her, he’ll likely die from her venomous bite later. The angry whale goes for a flipper, but the agile mosasaur swims out of the way. She counters and slashes his back from above. The whale tries to go after her more vulnerable stomach, but the ever elusive mosasaur outflanks him again.
The whale charges again with incredible speed. For once, the mosasaur is not ready and the whale slams into her with his massive head. The Mosasaurus is temporarily stunned and the Basilosaurus takes advantage of that. He tears into the base of her tail and blood pours from the injury. The sudden attack snaps her back into the moment and she turns on the attacking whale. Her teeth slice through even his protective blubber and tear at muscle. The Basilosaurus backs off. He’s starting to need air again and that’s not good.
The whale must turn his back on the Mosasaurus to go get some fresh air. The Mosasaurus moves in with blinding speed and goes for his tail fluke. Her teeth slice easily through the thin skin membrane. The whale swings his tail down, striking her in the face. She shakes her head, a bit dizzy now. The Basilosaurus charges for the surface and breaches. The momentum of his charge sends half of his body clear out of the water. His huge bulk crashes back down into the ocean, sending out huge waves.
As he dives again, he’s instantly met by the jaws of the Mosasaurus. Her teeth dig into his neck with unbelievable force. The whale bellows in pain. He struggles free of her jaws and turns on her. His teeth slice through her flank. The agile Mosasaurus manages to outflank the whale and she gets behind him. She latches on to the back of his tail, right in front of the fluke. He wrenches his tail out of her jaws, breaking some of her teeth. The Basilosaurus charges her again, slamming his skull into her flank. The Mosasaurus backs off with some cracked ribs.
The bull begins to notice a change. His vision is becoming blurry and his bites are swelling up. He’s a bit shaky too. The venom is wreaking havoc on his body. Because of his size, it took a while to really take effect. Now, it’s in his bloodstream and it’s everywhere. The Mosasaurus notices the change too and attacks. Her razor sharp teeth slash through his flank and his stomach with incredible speed.
The Basilosaurus is terrified now because of the venom. He starts to turn and retreat. The mosasaur follows him for a short distance, nipping at his tail as she chases him. Finally, she lets him go. The disoriented whale retreats in shame and agony. It’s unlikely he’ll survive for another hour.
Meanwhile, the Mosasaurus heads to the surface for some air. She has prevailed against not only a dangerous predator, but a bigger one. Now, she’s the apex predator in the ocean. Unrivalled. She dives deep and then charges for the surface. She leaps out of water, soaring ten feet into the air. She crashes back down into the ocean and descends into its murky depths.
Winner- Mosasaurus
The Basilosaurus was bigger and smarter, but very cocky. The Mosasaurus however, was more cautious with her attacks and this helped her a great deal. But her true advantage was in her venom, though she would have had a good chance of winning even without it.
Please note there's no evidence that mosasaurs were venomous. That was pure speculation based on the fact that their modern day relatives, monitor lizards, are also venomous and used for pure entertainment purposes.
