Setting- African River
FIGHT!
In the searing heat of Africa, a large river continues to flow. In it, a pod of hippos escaping the midday heat. A few crocodiles bask in the sun and a patrol the water. The two species usually fight, but today, there’s a strange peace. It will not last though.
A lone Utahraptor is just finishing up a kill. The zebra he took down attracted some unwanted attention, but he managed to fend of the lions that showed up to steal it. Now he must find water. The feathered dinosaur wipes his bloody jaws with feathered arm and moves on.
As he nears the river, he starts to proceed with caution. He knows hippos and crocs call the river home. He must be careful. As he walks to the bank, a large bull notices him coming. The hippo submerges, but keeps an eye on the dinosaur. The raptor watches the basking crocs, but none make a move toward him. One hisses, but that’s it. The raptor nears the waters edge and takes a drink. He notices a juvenile hippo not far away. Though not hungry, the raptor is up for a little fun. He runs up to the juvenile, feathers standing on end. The terrified hippo splashes into the water and swims off. The raptor “laughs” to himself, not realizing a big mistake he made. The bull watched the whole thing and is now moving in. The raptor goes back for another drink. As he starts to raise his head, the hippo lunges out of the water. The raptor leaps aside as the hippo charges onto dry land. The crocs scatter and the rest of the pod forms up defensive ranks around the young. The raptor snarls at the bull, taking personal offense to the attack. Raptors and hippos may be very different animals, but they do have one thing in common. Short fuses.
The hippo stares at the raptor and opens his jaws wide, showing off his massive canines. The raptor hisses and ruffles his feathers, making himself look bigger. Then his dull tan feathers turn bright orange in agitation. The hippo charges and the raptor leaps out of the way. He swipes the hippo’s flank with his claws, but it does little more than tick the bull off. The hippo turns and growls at the dinosaur. The raptor strikes again. Using his speed and agility, he manages to outmaneuver the angry hippo. He leaps onto his side and hangs on with his claws. He bites the hippo a few times while slashing with his hand claws. The raptor wants to use his foot claws, but he’s using those to hang on. The hippo bucks and the raptor falls off. The hippo nearly steps on the raptor’s skull, but the Utahraptor rolls out of the way. He bites the calf of the hippo while he’s down low and the hippo kicks out with his other foot. He strikes the raptor in the flank, breaking ribs and sending him flying. The raptor, resilient as rubber, bounces back and snarls.
The hippo charges, head down. He intends to simply plow the predator into the ground. The raptor easily avoids the charge. He slashes the hippo’s face, taking out an eye and tearing an ear to ribbons. The already angry hippo is now fully enraged. He whirls around and opens his jaws. The raptor is caught off guard and doesn’t react in time. The hippo’s jaws clamp shut on the raptor’s arm with unbelievable force. The raptor shrieks in pain and agony. The hippo shakes his head around, breaking even more bones, causing more bleeding, and terrible pain. The raptor lashes out with his foot and slashes the hippo twice with his sickle claw, once in the face and once in the chest. The hippo finally lets go because of this, blood pouring from his face and chest. The raptor leaps back and examines his mangled arm. It’s bloody, limp, and beyond repair. The hippo spits out a few feathers and charges again. With hate in his eyes, the raptor leaps into the air and lands on the hippo’s back. He holds on with his good arm and clawed toes. Then he starts to bite the hippo over and over again. The hippo tries to buck and throw him off, but it’s not working. The raptor digs in, this time using his sickle claws. The hippo bellows in pain and bucks over and over again. Finally, the raptor slips and he can’t hold on. The hippo bucks and throws him several yards.
The heavily bleeding hippo charges blindly at the raptor. The raptor sidesteps and the hippo gets a nasty gash in the side of his neck courtesy of the Utahraptor’s sickle claw. The hippo turns and slams his head against the raptor. The dinosaur stumbles back, dazed and disoriented. The hippo charges again, jaws open, and the raptor is not ready. He get’s picked up in the jaws of the angry hippo. The raptor screams as the hippo’s jaws close hard and crush the raptor. The bull throws the limp and lifeless body into the river. Having eliminated the threat, he rejoins his pod.
Once the raptor body hit the river, the water was stained with blood. It didn’t take long for the crocs to move in and literally tear it apart limb from limb.
Winner- Hippo
Bigger and more determined than the raptor, the hippo had this one in the bag. Though next time, it could be different.
Next time on Clash of Past and Present...
Despite being one of the first dinosaurs, Plateosaurus was still a sizable animal with large thumb claws for defense. The tiger is one of today’s most notorious big cats. What happens when these two heavyweights go head to head? Find out only in Clash of Past and Present.
