Chapter 9

A Shattered Reunion

Matt and Sarah ran from the building, never looking back. Eventually, they ran out of breath and had to stop for a moment to rest.

“I don’t think they followed us,” Matt said.

“He died for us Matt,” Sarah said, her voice quivering as a tear fell from her eye.

“I know,” Matt replied, taking her in his arms. “It’ll be alright.”

Once they got themselves under control, Matt and Sarah went looking for the others. It didn’t take them long, because the others found them.

“Finally, there you are,” Colt said.

“Where’s Zach,” Led asked, clearly concerned.

“He saved our lives, but he, gave up his own,” Matt said painfully.

“What was it,” Colt asked.

“Double clawed raptors or something,” Sarah said, still shaken up.

“Balaurs,” John muttered.

“I see you found some transportation,” Matt pointed out, trying to change the subject.

The rest of the team were piled into an old Silverado. Although covered in grime and some rust, it clearly worked. Led was driving with Colt in the passenger seat, John riding in the bed.

“Yeah, whole garage full of them,” Led said.

“Won’t go too fast, but at least we can fit everyone in it,” John said, motioning to the bed of the truck.

“I doubt it was from the original plant. Probably brought in during clean up years later,” Matt pointed out.

“Oh well, it runs. Let’s get out of here,” Led said.

Matt and Sarah climbed into the bed of the truck with John and hung on as Led gunned it. They passed a few buildings and encountered the last thing they wanted. Led slammed on the brakes and they all stared at a pack of Pyroraptors feeding on a Rhabdodon carcass. They all perked up and watched the truck. A snarl came across the alphas lips as he eyed them. The alpha howled and the pack charged. Led gunned the truck and peeled off in the opposite direction.

“We can’t leave with these guys dogging us. We’ll lead them straight into the real world,” Led pointed out.

“We have to try and lose them in amongst the buildings then,” Matt said.

Led turned and swerved, trying to lose the raptors. Matt, Sarah, and John loaded their guns and took aim. John squeezed off a shot and dropped a raptor. Sarah and Matt each fired, but the truck hit a bump and their aim was thrown off. Led was focused on driving and did not expect a raptor to drop down from a building, onto the hood of the truck.

“Holy crap,” Led yelled.

He nearly wrecked the truck in his surprise, but gained control. The raptor screeched at them and Colt pulled out his gun. He took aim through the glass and fired. The windshield shattered and the bullet struck the raptor right in the knee. The raptor squealed in pain and lost his grip on the hood. He fell off and Led ran him over. They could hear the crunch of bones beneath the truck. Two more raptors lept onto the roof of the truck from another building. John shot one that tried to jump into the bed of the truck and it rolled off the truck. The other one was going for Led and Colt. The raptor peered through the broken glass from the top of the truck and hissed. Colt fired and the bullet went straight through the raptors open mouth, and exited at the back of the throat. The raptor tumbled aside and Led kept driving.
