The Tyrannosaurs, Spinosaurs, and Charcarodontosaurs, oh my.

Don't worry, this ain't a fight or vs discussion. This is simply about the differences between the groups.

So the tyrannosaurs and spinosaurs were polar opposites while the carcharodontosaurs were the middle ground. The tyrannosaurs(the advanced ones at least) had really big heads, robust teeth, small arms, powerful build, and big brains. The spinosaurs had long(but "thin) heads, small(conical) teeth, long arms, slender builds, and (don't wanna say it, but for lack of better words) "small" brains. The carcharodontosaurs had big(but light) heads, long(but thin) teeth, medium arms, slenderish builds, and "medium" sized brains. The tyrannosaurs were more generalized than the spinosaurs, but not quite as generalized as the carcharodontosaurs. Spinosaurs were very specialized. Tyrannosaurs, not quite as specialized, but somewhat specialized in certain ways. Carcharodontosaurs were pretty generalized overall.

I know this is all common knowledge(I assume at least) and I didn't get quite as detailed as I could have, but I figured I'd leave that open for the comments. This isn't saying which group is better(the tyrannosaurs, haha, just messing with ya), simply how different the tyrannosaurs and spinosaurs were while how the carcharodontosaurs were a bit of a middle ground.

One Extreme

Other Extreme

Middle Ground

Hey! Who put that there!

Ha the last pic was great. Interesting topic and I guess I have to agree with you. Looking the pic with allosaurs included. Where do you think allosaurs would stand?

Allotitan, since the carcharodontosaurs were members of the allosaur family, I'd have to put it in the middle ground category, though closer to the spinosaurs since their more slender than the carcharodontosaurs(not closer to the spinosaurs relation-wise, simply in build and appearance, if that makes sense).

I definitely agree with pretty much everything.

Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common. The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in. -Brom-

All three groups were specialized in the prey around them.

The larger tyrannosaurids(Zhucheng, Tarbo, Tyranno) coexisted with ankylosaurs and in the case of rex, Ceratopsians of decent size. Their teeth were adept at crushing for this one purpose, to take them down and make dinner out of them. They occupied one niche, while the Dromaeosaurs of their time hunted hadrosaurs and even the small ceratopsians/sauropods - not to say tyrannosaurs did not do this as well.

Spinosaurs, were obviously adept at catching and killing fish/rays. Not too easy of a feat, as the fish they hunted had the potential of growing to twenty or so feet in some cases. The only competition they really had was crocodilians and pterosaurs, and even the Spinosaurs would have fed on them as well. That niche was theirs for the taking so to speak.

The Carcharodontosaurs, well they are just the Allosaurs but larger...much larger. They kept hunting the sauropods and even some hadrosaurs when they were available. That theropod family is truly the sauropod slayers.

I like how you went around presenting this, as it does seem Carcharodontosaurs/allosaurs were the middle ground if you will between those two 'extremes'.

That's a pretty awesome fight pic Rex Fan (I've already used it).

That comparison chart shows spinosaurus a bit...well, like a skeleton. There is no way in hell that a spinosaurus (or any other spinosaur for that matter) would be that scrawny (well not a healthy one anyway). IT'S NECK, IS A TOOTHPICK.

And where are giga's and spino's thighs? I don't see them...oh, waaait, there they are, on t-rex's legs.

Nice post though. :)

Youre fat, and I'm not sugarcoating it cause you'd probably eat that too.
