Chapter 5

High Speed Chase

The group approached the cars cautiously. Matt, Vasyl, and Zach got in the Jeep while the others got in the Ford. Zach carefully started the engine while John did the same with the Ford. No raptors in sight. Matt noticed Led had rolled his window down and got his rifle ready anyways.

“Hey Vasyl, why don’t you get your pistol out in case we encounter any other carnivores,” Matt suggested.

“Yeah, not a bad idea,” he replied.

The cars had only moved a few feet when the air erupted with an other worldly shriek. Matt whipped around and saw the most fearsome predator in the area emerge from behind a building. The Tarascosaurus was over twelve feet tall and thirty feet long. It probably weighed close to three tons! It focused its blood red eyes on the cars and roared again. Zach gunned it and John did the same in the other car. However, the Jeep and Ford weren’t exactly built for speed and the rough road didn’t help. They were barely doing forty miles an hour. Matt looked back and saw the Tarascosaurus was keeping up with them easily. He guessed it was running at least thirty miles per hour and holding that speed. The giant dinosaur roared again and things got a whole lot worse. From an alley up ahead, a second one appeared. Slightly smaller, it was a female and the first ones mate. She roared and charged the cars. Matt nodded to John in the other car and he understood.

“Zach, take this right,” Matt ordered.

Zach complied and turned. Matt watched as the Ford went left. With the cars split up, Matt hoped the predators might give up. He hoped they’d stick together. But he was wrong. The male roared and took off after them while the female went after the other car. The turn had slowed them down and he had caught up a bit. Matt got a good look at him. Ribs were sticking out and his skin was heavily armored, although the scales were blotched. The Tarascosaurus roared again and it was so close, it hurt the groups ears. Vasyl tried to shoot it, but the road was too rough and he couldn’t aim well. The pistol probably wouldn’t do much anyways except maybe tick him off. Zach saw the alley was about to end and that he’d have to choose which way to turn. He went right. The turn was sharp and the Tarascosaurus tripped over his own feet. He fell hard. Due to his small arms, he had trouble getting back up quickly. Zach took the opportunity and gunned it. The Tarascosaurus saw they were escaping and roared in frustration.

As they were pulling away, Matt was able to think clearly for the first time and it stunned him that he hadn’t thought of it earlier. They had communications. He grabbed the case that housed the phones, but it was opened and the phones destroyed, probably by the raptors. The only thing they had were some old, short range walkie-talkies. Matt knew the Ford had them too and he attempted to call them. He had to try a few channels before he got anyone.

“Matt, is that you,” Sarah asked.

“Yeah, we lost the male. Where are you,” Matt asked.

“We’re heading toward Chernobyl with both of them right behind us,” Sarah replied.

“We’ll see if we can get to you,” Matt said, ending the conversation.

Matt told Zach to take a left. After rounding the corner, Matt saw the Ford crossing an intersection.

“Gun it Zach,” Matt yelled.

The Jeep lurched forward and got to the intersection just in time for what Matt had planned. The female Tarascosaurus just reached the intersection when they showed up and didn’t have time to stop herself from running into them. She tripped over the Jeep and fell hard. Her mate then tripped over her. The two dinosaurs struggled to get up while Zach drove off behind the Ford. Matt glanced back and saw the Tarascosaurus’ had managed to stand up. They roared one more time and moved off. Matt looked forward again and noticed they were heading to Chernobyl. In their condition, they should really be heading back to the perimeter. But the only way back was through the dinosaur infested city. Their only hope was finding some more reliable form of communication within the confines of Chernobyl.

Thanks. Now you know what the "bigger predator" is.

Great chapter. Looking forward to the next one.

Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common. The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in. -Brom-
