Carnosaur
MemberCompsognathusJun-28-2014 11:29 AMBeen way too lazy to write out a fight...but round 2 is coming..soon..
Anyway, In Something Real's Giganotosaurus discussion, i brought up the killing methods of Giganotosaurus and Mapusaurus. Right now, I would like to go into greater detail on it.
Planet dinosaur did a small snippet on the feeding habits of Mapusaurus on Argentinosaurus. In it, they stated Mapusaurus would simply tear hunks of flesh off with its jaws, and swallow it down. The theropod would back off, leaving the Argentinosaurus to go graze on the trees and other foliage. You can find the video down below.
Carcharodontosaur killing technique
Thinking about it only strengthened my belief that these Carnosaurs would utilize the method. From a predators standpoint, it makes a great deal of sense.
Even in roaming death squads, Argentinosaurus was still a great deal more massive them Mapusaurus. To get an idea, here's a size comparison of sorts
The plant eater is simply more massive. Cooperative hunting would indeed strengthen the chance of a kill, but the sauropod isn't defenseless. It would take out one on occasion.
To avoid the chances of severe injury and even death, wouldn't it be simpler evolutionarily speaking to possess a more efficient killing method?
Carcharodontosaurid teeth, especially the teeth of Mapusaurus, are built to slice and tear. The jaws are built much like scissors in that aspect.
The fine serrations on either side aid in the bite, causing bloodloss.
The arms - while large- could not be much of any use when tackling multi hundred ton prey. Nor would leaping up onto the Argentinosaurus' side. It's simply too large for either of these tactics to come into play.
Giganotosaurus did not live along side Argentinosaurus, but rather smaller sauropods like Andesaurus. Giganotosaurus, being so large, would not need to utilize this technique. Instead, it would simply overpower the small plant eater. Smaller Carcharodontosaurids that lived along side the lesser sauropods as well, would not need to utilize this technique.
Carcharodontosaurus, Mapusaurus, and perhaps even Sauroniops could utilize it because they hunted gigantic prey. If they would use it for other prey species, that's beyond me.
Just my thoughts, what do you guys think>

Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common. The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in. -Brom-
