Tyrannosaurus: Not as big as you may think

Something i've noticed, especially on this forum. Every one thinks Tyrannosaurus is ' the king' and that it wins in every fight it's ever in. Well, right now, i'm going to take an in depth look at this animal. Going to show you it's not as big and fearsome as you might have thought...

The biggest Tyrannosaurus ever discovered was Sue FMNH PR2081, one of the largest, most extensive and best-preserved  specimens ever found, being somewhere between 70 - 80 percent complete. Estimates put "Sue" at around 12.3 meters TBL. Overestimations, especially recent ones put Ole' Sue at around 9 tons TBW.

From that study, we have this little gem of a picture..

As we can see, there is a lot of extra flesh that whoever engineered these figures, made it entirely too much. Makes the Tyrannosaurus look like a sausage casing rather then an apex predator.

now, we move onto the fragmentary giants every tyrannosaurus lover points to.

Let's start with the mysterious UCMP 137538.

What? that's it? well, yeah...It's a pedal phalanx ascribed to Tyrannosaurus because a basic morphilogical resemblance. Estimates for this toe bone range from 13-15 meters in length....

WHY?

Specimens of Tyrannosaurus have shown us time and again, individual variation within the skeleton is evident. To me, this isn't evidence of tyrannosaurus getting 14 or so meters. It's garbage at this point.

MOR 008?

that one skull that is "larger then that of sue"? well, i have some news for y'all. Juvenile animals tend to have larger heads then adults proportionally to their bodies.

C-Rex and F-Rex are indeterminate from what i've read up on..likely Carcharodontosaurs.

So there we have it, a quick debunking of some misconceptions and fabeled giants.

My estimates put Tyrannosaurus at 11-12 meters long and 5.5 tons at average.

Feel free to dispute any of this with me, i'll be happy to oblige.

You know what? That's your opinion and we are fine with it as long as you don't go bashing ours just because you don't agree with it. That said, of Rex and Spino are mentioned (or I perceive that it is even hinted at) in the the same post (well, Spino in General, because this was, afterall, a T-Rex discussion), I will lock this. No hard feelings, but we need to keep it under control.

Just calm down. We all do our own research as well, and we all have different thoughts on it.

It's like someone saying that Dodge trucks suck. That's what you think, but in the past 15 years my family has owned Dodge trucks, we've had nothing but quality vehicles. Just an example I thought of quickly.

Is it a first, second, third or fourth generation Dodge pickup? We've never had a first or fourth, but we had two second gens, and currently have a third ten.

Gen. 1 - pre 1990

Gen. 2 - before 2002

Gen. 3 - up to 2013 or so

Gen. 4 - 2013 or so and newer.

Gen 3. very good condition but it eats gas up really fast, and the car just had some problem that we had to stop us and go to a reapair center.

And this was DURING the road trip.

I was referring to trucks, not vans, not cars, but trucks. Got your email, and my recommendation is: get a mega cab. Diesel preferably because the gas gets 8 miles to the gallon, but they are powerful.

Eh, I am pretty sure I will manage. I never really got excited for pick-up trucks or trucks in general.

Well, before this discussion goes down the path I see it going, I think I'll close it. Sorry Acro, but I can't be partial to anyone. If this was MrHappy's discussion and it was turning into a Rex vs Spino debate, I'd do the same. If it was Raptor401s, I'd do the same. End of story. Enjoy the rest of the forums.
