MemberCompsognathusMay-10-2014 9:23 AMThe day started off as any other would.
I parked my 2004 Ford Escape in my usual spot. Putting on my Jurassic World cap, i stepped out of my car. The echoing bellows of the Brachiosaurs signaled the 5 o'clock hour.
I walked past the colassal entry gate, which had just been nearly demolished when the Sauroposeidon herd ran amuck in the park. Damn things were so large, the fences Patel had put in could barely contain them.
"Morning Rob!" came a voice that shattered my thought train. I glanced over my shoulder, to see my fellow park biologist rushing up to meet me. His name had escaped my mind; it had been one of those mornings.
"Another day at the office!" he said cheerfully.
"Of Course", i muttered. "Isn't Mr. Hammond coming for a visit today? i know the boss man said something about it last week"
Hammond had said he would visit the new park, but with the incidents of 1993 still fresh in everyone's mind, I wouldn't blame him if he never showed.
"Oh, yes he is!" said the man whos name i thought was Ryan. We're all supposed to sit in the dining room of the visitor center and meet & greet him."
'Jesus this is gonna make for one hell of a morning' was my only thought.
I walked with my fellow park biologist to the visitor center, where i was met with the usual day staff. My mind was too exhausted to process each of their names, but i had worked with each of them for years.
"Rob, the Spinosaurus' sail is turning that weird blue color again" said the game warden with a tinge of concern in his voice. His eyebrows were furrowed, I knew for a game warden, he knew little about these animals.
"Yes, it's the mating season for the Spinosaurs", i explained. " Since that big one is a male, he's going to be very aggressive and sport that sail like a peacock sports his feathers. It's quite amazing."
He stared blankly at me.
I walked to the employee lounge, the animal Bio's were in a small gray file cabinet. The species were alphabatized. ' Alamosaurus, Balaur, Coelocanth, Dinotherium...Ah! Spinosaurus!' I hoisted the little file out of the cabinet, walking briskly back to my co- workers. "Here you go! every bit of info you need on ol' Spino." I said cheerfully. The file thudded down on the metal table with a soft sound.
The game warden thumped through the file, a look of amusement and entertainment plastered on his face. " Quite amazing, Rob!" He stated. "You made this yourself?"
I beamed, " yes, that file comes from 130+ hours of watching the Spinosaurs, both in the wild and here at the park."
"Quite impressive" Would you like to come with me on the tour today? I sure could use you with all the bloody tourists around"
"Sure thing!" I said enthusiastically. This had been my passion since i was young. Teaching about prehistoric animals was the one thing i had always dreamed about. Around three years ago, while at a paleontological convention, Patel had approached me with a job offer. I had taken it without hesitation. Today, I'm the lead Park biologist at the park, with a myriad of assistants under my wing. Couldn't be more proud.
"I just need to check up on the Mosasaurs and Pterosaurs, and we can go."
" Right this way, John" Came the voice of Patel. As the doors opened, i rushed to the nearest wall. My fellow staff did the same, we had our orders.
John Hammond was a short man, and some where in his 90's by now. His thick white beard and blazing blue eyes held much sorrow, yet gave a childish glee as he eyed the visitor center and us.
Here we have our Head Game warden, One of our Lead Animal Handelers, Our Park bioligists, and Head keepers,." Patel Said "We'll be seeing more, But these are our Usuals...
I walked straight to Mr. Hammond and shook his hand. "Pleased to finally meet you, Mr. Hammond" Keeping eye contact with the man was rather difficult. "I would love to stay and chat, but i need to check on our Mosasaur and Pterosaur enclosures. I hope to see you on the tour later tonight."
As i walked out the door, i heard Hammond say in astonishment " You have those here?"
My entry for the park staff writers challenge, hope you enjoyed!
