She felt the eyes on her long before she heard the footsteps. The female Albertosaurus had caught on by now, and would stop every few hundred yards or so. The thundering footsteps would stop soon after.
Fear flooded her body, she quickened her pace, gaining some distance on whatever it was.
The sun was starting to set over the majestic purple mountains, visibility was about to get horrible. She never could see in the dark very well, and the solidified lava fields surrounding her offered her no cover. Yet, the animal following her managed to stay invisible.
She felt very vunerable.
Lifting her massive head, she caught the scent of the thing.
The stench of rotting garbage invaded her nostrils. But what really struck her, was the next intruding smell.
The smell of Tyrannosaur.
She had reached the foothills of the mountains now, her nerves had gotten the best of her. With her back turned to the grassy knolls, she roared out to her stalker.
He emerged from behind a dead redwood tree.
The Young bull Daspletosaurus walked slowly, with a determined gait. His entire body rippling on the fringe of action; his jaws agape. Eyes filled with murderous intent.
He roared at the Albertosaurus, and sprinted towards her.
She turned her body sideways, and as he got within striking distance, swung her tail like a baseball bat.
She clubbed him in the side of the head, sending him reeling. He recovered quicker then the Albertosaur expected.
He rammed into her flank, yet she stood firm. She thrusted her weight towards him, he took a few steps back.
Without warning, he lunged forward once more. He targeted her arm, biting down on it with alarming ferocity.
She broke through the shock, slamming her head onto the top of his. He fell to the ground, howling in suprise. She delivered a short kick to the head, and backed away. She roared; a roar that shook the cooled lava below their feet. Steam bellowed angrily from the new crust.
Shocked, the Daspletosaurus got to his feet. He glanced at the Albertosaurus, and turned to leave. A low, echoing growl erupted from his chest, a sign of submission among the Tyrannosaurs.
She watched him leave, and started her trek up the mountain. Her journey was about to come to an end.
Nature doesn't deceive us; it is we who deceive ourselves.
