Chapter 7

A Nasty Surprise

As the sun rises, the world comes alive again. Synca looks to see Lunar still sleeping beside him. He gently nudges her awake. At first, she’s surprised. But upon seeing Synca, she relaxes. Synca gives a loving growl and the two get up. Time to find some breakfast.

Before they go hunting, they must quench their thirst. Lunar leads Synca to the nearest pond to drink. Then, they move off. Lunar knows this place better than Synca, so she leads the way. Lunar knows of a local hadrosaur herd that should make a good target. When the pair finds them, Synca’s jaw drops. He’s never seen hadrosaurs this big. The Edmontosaurus tower over the Nanotyrannus pair. Normally, Lunar would not bother attacking, their too big. But she knows that with Synca hunting alongside her, their chances are better. She gives Synca the signal to stay low. She’s gonna move in and try to direct a young one towards him. Synca does as she says and get’s as low to the ground as he can. Then, Lunar is off, charging the herd and roaring all the way. This certainly gets their attention. The herd stampedes and Lunar makes her move. She zeroes in on a subadult and cuts it off. The young hadrosaur has no idea what to do. He goes with his instinct and tries to run away from Lunar. This is exactly what she hoped for. He not only runs away from her, but also his herd. As the hadrosaur gets closer, Synca tenses up for the attack. When he’s within striking distance, Synca leaps forward. He lands on the back of the Edmontosaurus and holds on for dear life. Then, he begins to slash at the dinosaur with his teeth. Lunar moves in to help. She jumps on his flank and goes to work. Eventually, the hadrosaur stops struggling and succombs to blood loss.The two Nanotyrannus’ jump off as the dinosaur falls. Synca nuzzles Lunar and then they dig in. It’s the first meal Synca has shared with anyone since his family died.

When the sun rises again, Synca wakes up and stretches his legs. He yawns and blinks in the glaring sun. That’s when he realizes he’s alone. Lunar is not beside him. He frantically looks around to see where she went. Then, Synca notices a puddle of blood beside him. He’s seized with fear and calls out for her. No answer. He tries again. This time, something happens. The trees begin to shake as something makes it’s way to Synca. Syna leaps up to meet who it is. But it’s not Lunar that exits the forest. As the clawed foot and huge muzzle comes into view, Synca becomes stiff with fear and hate. The dinosaur opens his mouth and reveals rows of blood covered fangs. Synca does not need to guess whose blood it is. Scarface has struck again.

Upon seeing his old rival, Synca roars in hatred. Scarface almost laughs at him. Then, he comes into full view. Synca sees he’s much bigger than the last time he saw him. And he has a new scar. One that zigzags from the base of his head, down the side of his neck. Scarface roars at his old enemy and Synca knows what he must do. Despite his deep desire to see the downfall of Scarface, he knows he must run. Synca is once again driven from his home.

As he crosses the Canadian border, he enters a new area. This is Montana. Synca stops to catch his breath. He makes a vow to never again leave his home. This is where he will stay. This is where he will die.
