Two in the Land of Giants: Episode 1, Dangerous World
In a little nest on a hill in Middle Cretaceous Argentina sits an egg. Around it, are the egg's two parents. The egg is very close, the hatching, maybe another 20 minutes or so. The two parents watch the egg expectantly, they have protected the egg for nearly a month in this dangerous world. This is the only one that made it. If it doesn't hatch, then all their work would have been for nothing. An hour passes by, and the parents are about to lose hope. The female doesn't think that she could produce another batch of eggs even if she wanted to. They wait one more hour, and the start to leave. They are distraught at the death of the egg, and they know that another batch is impossible. This was their second attempt, and it still failed. Then, a sharp crack splits the air. The two parents look back at the egg to see a claw sticking out of it. The two rejoice and run to the hatching dinosaur. The claw recedes back into the egg, and then it comes out again, but this time, the hand comes with it. The claw is about twice as long as the other two, the dinosaur, is a Megaraptor. The little Megaraptor brings his hand back into the shell, and then pushes his face through the opening, breaking yet more shell. The female Megaraptor, whose name is Katrina, gently puts her smallest claw on the shell, the smallest claw is still 4 inches long, and easily breaks through the egg. The newborn Megaraptor is a male named Tyler. He looks around, already able to see as an adaptation to survive this very dangerous world. His father looks at him, and Tyler looks back. Then Tyler's father, Ethan, stands up and looks around. He doesn't see any predators, but he is still alert. He knows that there are Oxalaia, Mapusaurus,Tyrannotitan, Ekrixinatosaurus, and scores of other predators bigger than them. He still doesn't see anything, so he assumes its safe. He grabs the piece of meat that he had brought for Tyler and rips a small chunk off. He then drops it in front of his son. Tyler, who is hungry after emerging from his egg, eats its it very quickly and happily. Ethan and and Katrina have already eaten, so they just cover the meat with ferns and other plants to hide its smell. They have been around long enough to know how to find, and keep others from finding food. Especially fish. With their long hand claw, spearing fish is easy, but since it takes so little effort and is so plentiful, that there is leftovers, which after a while, is like a beacon to scavengers. The two parent Megaraptor's know that where scavengers go, large predators follow. It works both ways, with large predators killing the food, and scavengers leading the large predators to an easy meal. They find that covering food with plants and then burying it masks the scent, and when they dig it up, the plants keep it someone fresher. Tyler is just starting to walk around when his amazing sense of smell (another adaptation to survive, the younger Megaraptors have better smell and hearing) tell him that there is danger nearby. He gives an alarming squeak, and his parents instantly go over and protect him. They are on large hill with a fairly dense forest around them, and their nest is in a large clearing on the top of the hill. The trees aren't very tall, only around 15 feet, which lets the Megaraptors hide under them while the larger carnivores are in plain sight.
Two in the Land of Giants: Episode 2, Another Story
At the same time that Tyler hatched, another egg was breaking, but this one is quite different. When it comes to the ranking among dinosaurs here in this area of Argentina, it is the ruler. It is Oxalaia. The mother Oxalaia is the most feared dinosaur for miles around. She had come from a place farther north where a pack of Giganotosaurus reined supreme, and when she came here, she quickly became dominant. Not even the Ekrixinatosaurus Atlas would stand up to her. Her mate was killed by the pack of Giganotosaurus, but it didn't faze her. Her mate was going to leave her anyways, as is the nature of Oxalaia. Now, she only has one egg. It is the only one still alive, as the other ones just failed to hatch. The egg starts to shake, and then a snout goes through the egg. The young Oxalaia breaks out of her egg, and the female Oxalaia, who is named Quimby, steps out into the world. She is already 1.5 feet long and 10 lbs, and she can walk. The mother Oxalaia's name is Hera, and like the goddess, she is queen. Hera is about to go pick her child up in her mouth when she hears a cracking sound. She turns to look at it and finds a Carnotaurus. They are annoyingly common, and no matter how many she kills, they always come back for more. The Abelisaur had stepped on a twig and given away its position. It had hoped to kill Quimby before she could grow up and continue the terror caused by such a huge predator. Hera decides that she wants to kill something, and that something is the Carnotaurus. She lunges at the Abelisaur, who start to run away. The Abelisaur wasn't fast enough. Hera catches the Carnotaurus and grabs it with her long snout. Then she lifts him up like he weight nothing and shakes him like a rag doll. Then she throws him. The Carnotaurus lands around 50 feet away, dead from the impact. Hera roars, challenging anything else around. This is why she is queen of the valley. She is a ruthless killing machine, bigger than everything else around. She turns her attention back to Quimby, and she goes to gently pick her up. Then the mother daughter pair to off to a large lake where Hera can both fish from and hunt. That's where she will raise her child and teach her how to survive in this big world. She won't have a huge amount of time with her mother, so she needs to learn all she can.
Two in the Land of Giants: Part 3, Trouble in the Nest
The parent Megaraptors huddle protectively over Tyler, making sure that he is safe. Out of the forest, an Abelisaurus walks into the clearing. He is slightly longer than the pair of Megaraptors, and is bulkier. Ethan growls, trying to scare the Abelisaurus away, and Katrina follows. The Abelisaurus doesn't back down, and instead lowers his head and charges. Katrina instantly picks up Tyler in her jaws and runs one way while Ethan goes another. Then The Abelisaurus turns towards Katrina. He lowers his head and runs at her. Then, Ethan slashes the leg of the Abelisaur with his long hand claws. The Abelisaurus roars and turns, snapping at Ethan. The Abelisaurus lands a bite on Ethan's side. Katrina slashes at the Abelisaurus, who lets go of Ethan and roars. Then he runs away. Ethan and Katrina weren't very wounded, but they where scared. They know that Tyler is safe. He was hidden under roots of a tree, and when he saw that the Abelisaurus left, he came out, and gives little chirps, calling to his parents. The Katrina walks over to Tyler and nuzzles him affectionately. Tyler pushes himself up against Katrina's snout. Finally, Tyler walks away, and he walks around the clearing, investigating rocks and other small plants. A lizard runs at him, it is about twice as long and nearly as tall even on all four legs. Tyler looks at the lizard, who stares back. Then, Tyler lashes out with his long hand claw, creating a deep gash in the lizard's snout. The lizard starts to run away, but Tyler is faster, and he lashes out with his hand claw again. This time, he hits the lizard's back leg, disabling it. The lizard keeps running, but it is slower, and Tyler catches up to him. He thrusts his lo hand claw into the back of the lizard, severing many vertebra and the spinal cord. The lizard is paralyzed, and Tyler quickly starts to tear it apart alive. A year later, Tyler is already 2 feet long, and his is armed to the teeth. His hand claw is proportionately bigger than it will be when he is an adult, and it is 3 inches long already. Tyler is about to be taken on his first hunt, the target, an Iguanadont. Ethan is on the alert, looking for any prey available. He smells something, a large fish maybe? Its not something he normally smells on land, and he is curious. Katrina smells it too, and she starts towards it. A free meal is always preferred over anything else. Katrina wanders for a while, and she finally finds the cause of the smell. A large Plesiosaur was dragged all the way from the sea and is being eaten by an adult Oxalaia. There is a little Oxalaia with her eating, and its about 10 feet long. Katrina is scared to just be in the presence of the adult Oxalaia, and she decides to quickly head back to her family. The trio of Megaraptors keep walking in search of prey. This time, Tyler picks up the scent of something wounded. The small Megaraptor runs towards the smell, and they enter a grassland. In the grassland, there is an Amargasaurus several wounds on its side and shoulders. A dead Abelisaur lies at its feet, most likely crushed by the small Sauropod. Ethan and Katrina decide that, while it isn't the ideal prey, it will be a good lesson on sauropod hunting. Ethan crouches down and starts to walk towards the Amargasaurus. When he is about 30 feet away, he springs up and runs at top speed. He lashes out at the Sauropod's neck with his long hand claws, cutting a very deep gash. Then Katrina goes to aid in the attack. She slashes at the Sauropod's neck, digging into the flesh. Ethan attacks again, and punctures the jugular. The Amargasaurus roars as it bleeds out, and soon it is dead. The family of Megaraptors start eating, and when they are full, they start to leave. Then a roar splits the air. An Ekrixinatosaurus makes himself known. The family of Megaraptors look at the Abelisaur, and then run at top speed. The Ekrixinatosaurus starts to follow, but the Allosaurs where too fast, and they get away.
Two in the Land of Giants: Episode 4, The River
Quimby is slow at getting bigger. She is only 6 feet long and a year old and its about time for her to learn how to fish. It will be an important part of her young life. Hera wades out into the water, only knee deep for her, but her small daughter has to swim to get out into the same waters. Hera scans the water for a good sized fish, and then she sees dorsal fin cut through the river top. Its a freshwater shark. Hera hates those things, they scare away the fish and seem to get all the good seafood. It is a strange sight to see a huge theropod lunge through the water with surprising speed at a dorsal fin. Hera crashes into deep water head first, only her sail above the water. The fin goes under, and then Hera is seen going into shallower waters, a 9 foot shark in her mouth. Quimby looks at her mother, and then back at the water, ready to follow her example. A very large fish unknowingly raises to the surface enough for its fin to show. It quickly dives under again, but Quimby as already locked on to her target. She lunges for the fish who was even bigger than the shark was. Its a huge 13 foot swordfish, and Qiumby tackles it. The fish panicky and thrashes around while swimming deeper, however, Quimby has her claws and teeth death in the fish, and she doesn't plan to let go. She thrashes with the fish, and eventually gets it to move the way she wants. Quimby is able to maneuver it so that her head is just high enough above the surface of the water for her to breath. The fish doesn't like it, but it is slowly getting tired, and after nearly an hour of bloodloss and exhaustion, the fish completely yields and an extremely tired Quimby can drag it to the shore, it is a huge task, but she does drag it up on land. Then she starts to eat, still dripping from her time in the river, fortunately, it was a slow river, but she was still carried for many miles away from her mother, but she isn't thinking about that right now. Right now, she is tired, and enjoying the taste of her food. Hera, on the other hand, isn't having such a good time. She is roaring in outrage and distraught at losing her only child, and is going in the direction the river took her, destroying trees and smaller animals who are foolish enough to get in her path. A total count of two Carnotaurus heads are flung into the river, an Iguanadont became a tree ornament, and a pack of Aucasaurus where torn limb from limb. Still, Quimby is many many miles away, and she in on her own right now. However, she is relatively safe. She is in the territory of her mother, and recognizes it. Nothing would dare touch her for fear of the walking hell that is her mother. The family of Megaraptors are also teaching Tyler how to fish with much better results. Ethan caughta good 3 foot trout and Tyler the equivalent of 2 goldfish. Katrina has also had good luck, and caught the biggest of all, a 7 foot Grooper. The combined amount of fish is more than plenty, and the family eats well that day. After eating, the family hear a loud crash and look upstream. A branch sails over their head, and they know that Hera is near and angry. So of course they do the only logical thing when faced with a 50 foot long angry mother, run like mad away from the furious Oxalaia.
Two in the Land of Giants: Episode 5, Waking Up
Two weeks from the fishing incident Quimby wakes up to a peculiar smell. She opens one eye to see several sets of legs. Her brain not processing what is happening, she closes that eye and tries to go back to sleep. Then it hits her, and she literally jumps up, screaming her head off in distress calls. O course, she then remembers that her mother isn't there. What is there is a pack of Mapusaurus, the largest, an old battle veteran nearly 42 feet long and enough battle scars that there is barely a foot of him that isn't healed flesh. She keeps screaming, even though she knows that it is pointless. The Mapusaurus pack will kill her, and there is nothing she can do. Most of the Mapusaurus pack do want to kill her, but the leader knows better. He is the oldest and wisest, and has seen enough to know that Quimby's mother is able to hunt down each individual of his pack, and that even as a team, it wouldn't be easy to take her down. His plan is very risky, but he knows that if it works, he will be king of Argentina.
Well, that's all I have before I stopped. I might continue, but only if I'm feeling bored and a bit creative.
