Just How Much Could A T. rex Weigh?

I decided to sit down and do some calculations to figure out how much T. rex might have weighed. We all know that T. rex grew slowly before age 12 or so, then it bulked up quickly until age 18 or so. Recent studies show that T. rex gained nearly 10 pounds a day during that rapid growth. So, after 7 years of growth, a T. rex would have gained over 25,000 pounds(3,650 per year and 25,550 to be exact)! Considering it probably weighed at least 2,000 pounds or so by age 12 and would have gained a little during the 12 years before it died at age 30, a T. rex may have weighed as much as 28,000 pounds or so! Since the environment would have an effect on how much a T. rex weighed and since no 2 T. rex's are the same, that weight would vary a bit. I'd feel safe in concluding that an adult T. rex would weigh no less than 18,000 pounds, and possibly as much as 28,000 pounds(9-14 tons). Just my theory. I simply wanted to share it with you all :)

Interesting, I indeed do agree, However, ten pounds is fairly minniscule, but they didn't eat everyday like humans.

Some times they would go days between meals, Tracking, stalking, and attempting to ambush prey... By a rough educated guess, I'd say 1 out of every 10 attempts at hunting were a sucess. Depending on the prey...

i agree with most of this, but don't you think a 14 ton rex would be a little chunky? I myself think the weight range is 8-12 tons, just my opinion ;)

I think that some could've been a mere 6 or 7 tons while others could've reached up to 14 tons (i realized that 16 is just too much) so I pretty much agree with you except for the minimum weight.

Like I said, it's my theory.

Paden, I agree with you. Environment, individuality, and other factors could effect a T. rex's weight, that's why I provided a little wiggle room.

Carnosaur, I know what you mean. But hey, it's no chunkier than the "20 ton Spinosaurus" a lot of people believe in ;)

UCMP, I think that a healthy, fully grown, and mature T. rex would weigh no less than 16,000 pounds(I'll admit 18,000 may be a touch high). That is a T. rex that has reached it's full "potential." I understand some might not reach their full potential and some might even exceed the 28,000 pound weight. A good example for that idea are dogs. Labrador Retrievers should, I do stress should, be no less than 65 pounds and no more than 80 pounds or so. That's the "standard." That said, some may be smaller than 65 pounds and some may be bigger than 80. That make sense?

I appreciate your comments guys :)

The 6 to 7 tons would be out of the 'normal' weight range for an adult T.Rex, but an unusually small and starving Rex would imo be at about 6 to 7 tons. If we are talking about a healthy animal it would be in the 9+ tons range.

@ UCMP sure, but there are always outliers within a species. For example, let's say a  6 ton rex and 14 ton behemoth rex. those aren't the norm, far outside the expected weight for a healthy individual.

The 20 ton estimate for spino is a load of bull. There's no scientific evidence to even merely support it. The 9+ ton rex however, has a factual basis.

My tyrannosaurus weight estimations are any where from 9-11 tons. With rather large individuals getting to around 13 tons

I can see that Acro. My official range will now be 8-14 tons. That's what I'll put on my site(which currently says 7-11 tons).

I find very hard to believe that a 40-45ft long, 16-16.5ft. tall animal would grow as large as 14 tons. I also find it hard to believe a Tyrannosaurus gained 10 pounds a day.

I do believe that a Tyrannosaurus could've gotten to 8.5 tons, and maybe 9, but 14 tons is too large of a number for me. I there was a t-rex that was 45ft and 14 tons, imagine how slow it would be. It would be obese. For that short a height, and that short a leng, it would be one pudgy, slow dinosaur.

And I too believe that a 20 ton spino way too high, 11-14 tons sounds more reasonable.

Or you'd end up with this...

Youre fat, and I'm not sugarcoating it cause you'd probably eat that too.
