Tyrannosaurus is a genus of Tyrannosaurid from the Late Cretaceous of North America. It's name means "Tyrant lizard King", it's not difficult to see why. At an average 13 meters and 8 tons ; with a maximum length and weight of 16 meters and 10 tons, It's truly massive.

Tyrannosaurus had banana sized bone crushing teeth. While they did possess a point, their main function was for bone crushing and tearing. It is estimated these giants had a bite force of around 8 tons! A bite from a 45 foot animal with those jaws would be devastating. With that, Tyranosaurus could prey on anything it wanted.

Rex was an apex predator. It sat on top of a food chain with no other large bodied predators to compete with. The next largest was Nanotyrannus(who i will address in a second), followed by Dromaeosaurus. Prey wasn't that easy to take down, though. Animals like Triceratops, an African Rhino on steroids with horns to match, and Ankylosaurus, an ancient version of a tank. Hadrosaurs like Edmontosaurus, and the gargantuan sauropod Alamosaurus lumbered on the plains of Late Cretacous North America.

It has long been disputed that Nanotyrannus is just a juvenile Tyrannosaurus. In my opinion, that's just not the case. There are several anotomical differences, including:

-  N. lancensis had 14-15 teeth in each side of the upper jaw and 16 teeth in each side of the lower jaw . T. rex, on the other hand, had 11-12 tooth positions in the upper jaw and 11-14 in the lower.

- The skull of N. Lancensis has an orientation more pointed towards the ground, compared to T.rex, who held its head horizontal to the ground. Indeed, a Ct scan of N.Lancensis showed the brain orientation to be different then that in Rex.

N. lancensis has a small pit in the quadratojugal, a bone in the back corner of the skull. Both the holotype and the "Jane" specimen have this feature, suggesting it is not a deformity, and it is not known in any adult tyrannosaurids.

It's all still open for debate, and there are those who still believe Nanotyrannus is a Juvenile Tyrannosaurus, just like most things in Paleontology. What we do know is Tyrannosaurus was one of the largest land carnivores to ever exist, and it's name is already heavily engraved in todays culture.

Good information and nice picture.

I'm looking forward to whatever fight Rex is in.

Have to say this, sorry if some people don't like it, but:

Nice. I definitely agree with this.

Nice. If there is one animal in the world that can instill fear with just it's name, it's Tyrannosaurus rex!

"everyting in palontology is an oppinion!!!1"- says you not a month ago. Seriously, you people are stubborn as shit; you only accept things as fact when it goes your way. You guys really aren't putting yourself in very good light to this forum (WHICH HAPPENS TO BE A LEGITIMATE ANIMAL FORUM WHERE 95% OF THE MEMBERS KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT AND CAN ACTUALLY ENGAGE IN SCIENTIFIC DISCUSSION WITHOUT REFUTING EVERYTHING AS A DAMN OPINION): http://theworldofanimals.proboards.com/thread/465/topix-animal-community

I swore that I would not come back here, but this is literally making even my eyes facepalm... I'm sorry for being like this, but it should be a shame that the people on Topix are more fun to debate with and are in general less biased and hypocritical (and THAT is not something to be proud of... If you guys make the forum that is polluted with spammy and nonsensical trolls look like the presidential debate, you guys clearly have some tweaking to commence)

No response to my PM, eh? I was trying to avoid making this public, but here we go.

There's no need to be an ass about something that happened last November just because we have different thoughts than you. Just calm down with what you view as facts, and if we disagree with something you say, deal with it. I think if I was a complete ass to everyone who has different thoughts than me, nobody would like me. If I was an ass, I sure as hell wouldn't be a Moderator now, and I probably wouldn't have 46 followers like I do now.

Just calm down though, I'm trying to avoid a fire fight, but if that happens, you'd be fighting an uphill battle.

are you kidding, mate? i said most things are an opinion multiple GODDAMN times. including your B.S. spino stuff. Go back into out old discussions to see that.So do you REALLY want to start this right now? we can go all day, bro.

"not putting ourselves in a good light"? how? by presenting Facts about Tyrannosaurus that are accepted my most paleontologists?

Also, Are you really calling us hypocrital and biased Mr." Spino is bigger then rex because i say so"?

See? This is what I am talking about... You guys claim anything else to be BS but yet you always only treat it as fact when you say so yourselves. I have tons of evidence to prove my points, but yet you guys keep going around and stating how I am wrong. Your logical is immensely flawed. I'm sorry, but you are the weakest link

Quote: "not putting ourselves in a good light"? how? by presenting Facts about Tyrannosaurus that are accepted my most paleontologists?

Oh dear... If I claim that spinosaurus had conical teeth, THAT is accepted by paleontologists; it is not a fucking opinion!

Quote: Also, Are you really calling us hypocrital and biased Mr." Spino is bigger then rex because i say so"?

Most paleontologists accept this as far as I am aware...

Quote: Just calm down with what you view as facts, and if we disagree with something you say, deal with it

You misunderstood me. This nonsensical and biased "everything in paleontology is an opinion" and "I do research and am right while you don't and are wrong" bullshit is what is getting on my nerves. At least the people on Topix can engage in fact-based dinosaur discussion and are at least fun to debate with... You guys make the people on Topix look like Jack Horner clones!

Quote: I think if I was a complete ass to everyone who has different thoughts than me, nobody would like me. If I was an ass, I sure as hell wouldn't be a Moderator now, and I probably wouldn't have 46 followers like I do now.

That is because you guys are on Scified, which is devoted to media as opposed to science. No offense, but you guys having a full-on paleontology subforum is a bit premature. If someone were to become a moderator on a dinosaur and/or zoology forum, they would need to know a lot about the topic at hand and be able to thoroughly discuss it without claiming that everything is an opinion

MemberCompsognathusFeb-23-2014 1:14 PM

godzillasaurus, do you want to have a debate? is that it? because, if you do, i'll open a new thread right now. But like S-Rex, you'll probably just blow off my offer, and continue saying how biased and hypocritical we are.

As i've stated so many times before, most of paleontology is opinion, theory, whatever. it goes hand in hand. Ask any paleontologist, and they will agree with me 100%. Once you present evidence to back up your claims, then it moves up a notch.

Nature doesn't deceive us; it is we who deceive ourselves.

Both of you, stop fighting! Carnosaur, stop provoking him, and Zillasaurus, stop being an ass. I know calling you an ass isn't helping any, but compared to what you've said so far, that's nothing.

Seriously though, stop fighting, I'm trying to keep things under control.

Theory =/= opinion. Paleontologists make theories based on what factual evidence we already have. An opinion is if you were to say dinosaurs were the best prehistoric lifeforms. But a theory is that dinosaurs were some of the most successful. HUGE DAMN DIFFERENCE

Sad. sad how people will always debate over useless stuff. Dinosaurs are meant for us to IMAGINE what they were like. We will never know too much about them. We can only get basic facts like how tall they were, but nothing else. We can imagine how it walked, hunted, and looked like.

Guys!  It's been a while since Godzillasaurus first made his opinions known, but they were all perfectly valid points.  Negative comments were made on both sides of the debate, and now people have been fueling the fire ever since.  Carnosaur, I'm talking to you, and MrHappy, your namecalling is not helping AT ALL. This is not moderating. And this is not excusing all the colorful and personally insulting replies from Godzillasaurus.  And don't tell me I don't know because I wasn't here for a while; I've read all those threads with you guys arguing.

Zilla, I agree with your points on Spino man, and no one on either team was trying to be a jerk when they expressed any opinion.  There is no settled answer/ winner of this debate, but can't it be made without all this crap from both teams?  This is the kind of thing that makes me want to leave this forum.

Alright guys ENOUGH. Godzillasaurus, everyone has opinions, you can state yours, but you can't say everyone else's is wrong. Carnosaur, dont try to fight with him, hes not being reasonable. Mr. Happy, you shouldn't call him names. Thats almost provoking, and that is certainly not moderating. Thats enough, ok guys?
