You'd think a dinosaur like this would be a celebrity in the dinosaur world. Well, while Giganotosaurus is quite famous among scientists and dinosaur enthusiasts, it's pretty unknown when it comes to the general public. Why? First, it's hard to pass up T-rex. Spinosaurus beat T-rex in JP III and T-rex is still the most popular dinosaur. However, the second thing is even more important. It has to do with the time of it's discovery. Giganotosaurus was discovered in the late nineties. It takes a little while for dinosaur discoveries to go public, and by the time Giganotosaurus was "released," so was JPIII. Giganotosaurus quickly became overshadowed by Spinosaurus because of this. So Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus got all the press and continue to do so while Giganotosaurus kinda just hangs back.
Why did I write this? Well, I was just sitting around thinking about giant dinosaurs and thought about it. So, I posted it. What do you guys think?

MemberCompsognathusSep-19-2013 9:24 PMI think that is deserves a lot of attention. 50 feet and 9.5 tons in my book. Giganotosaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Yangchuanosaurus really deserve more attention.

MemberCompsognathusSep-20-2013 12:55 AMYeah i agree ever since i first found out about Giganotasaurus it has been one of my favorites it really does deserve waaay more attention. i agree with the size estimates i see it being 43 - 45.5 feet
and around 9 tons

MemberCompsognathusSep-20-2013 3:33 AMIt was starting to overshadow T. rex in the way that it was getting more press than the king himself. Most people remember this classic late 90's image after they look at it

T. rex was much smaller on average (37-39 vs 43-46 feet)
and Giganotosaurus was on the rise as the new king.
Suddenly, Spinosaurus came on the scene, dwarfing T. rex and Giganotosaurus out of no where . However, the change was too sudden and started a whole new debate on whether Spino could beat rex, shattering the Giganotosaurus vs Tyrannosaurus debate.
Think about it- --Spinosaurus is everything Giga was and more.
Bigger than Giga, way longer arms, bigger skull, longer teeth, better vision, etc.
Giga was simply outclassed before it made it to safety. Spino is the bad guy, but he's becoming a good guy or rather antihero since people are warming up to him. You wouldn't guess it from the ratio of fans here, but here: CLICK HERE Spino fans are on the up and up from just a month ago, when it was 40-60.
Giga already passed Rex HERE
They both are happening on the same site.
Giga is on the rise, as well as Spinosaurus. I see Giga coming up to fame pretty soon.
Spino beats Giga on the site as well: CLICK

MemberCompsognathusSep-20-2013 7:59 AMGiganotosaurus is a giant blood thirsty sauropod-killing machine, it really deserves more attention. But it will remain unknown to the general public until they won't made it famous with a major documentary or a film with the proportions of Jurassic Park.

MemberCompsognathusSep-20-2013 3:14 PMI agree with most of what you guys said. Not all, but most ;)
A deadly killing machine in the same size class as Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus certainly deserves a little attention from the general public.

MemberCompsognathusSep-20-2013 9:38 PMI agree with this, T-Rex has had the floor for to long, believe me I love T-Rex but now it's losing the floor to Spino and Giga,it's there time to shine
welcome to the new age

MemberCompsognathusSep-20-2013 10:17 PMGiga is cool no doubt, it's one of my favorite theropods/dinosaurs but the problem with it is that it's too similar to T-Rex, I mean sure it's bigger as far as length and height goes and it does have 3 fingers instead of two but do you think the general public is going to know that? I don't think so, I think that's also why it's been overshadowed a bit, at least with Spino you could tell that it was a different carnivore because of the snout, longer arms and trademark spine sticking out of it's bad. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Giga in a none jurassic park film in the future.
P.S. T-Rex will ALWAYS be the King for reasons that I could explain again as usual but I'll give it a break for now lol.

MemberCompsognathusSep-20-2013 10:48 PMTo us dino freaks, the difference between Giganotosaurus and rex are like night and day, of course, they are small and unknown to real people. It still deserves more attention.

MemberCompsognathusSep-21-2013 5:22 AMi think that if they dont put the giga in the next jp they do the biggest mistake.
and i do some size estimanations that i post in this site, but now i add a picture too comparated to Scott Hartman's MUCPv-97:

MemberCompsognathusFeb-08-2014 10:55 PMScott Hartman has updated the new size estimates for both predators. Gigantosaurus was lightly built as you can see above. When a new theropod dinosaurs is discovered it usually gets over hyped in size but always turns out to be smaller in size. But Gigantosaurus is one of my favorites. I would rather have the King Sauropod killer squaring off against T-Rex any day!
