Episode 2 of Clash of Contemporaries Velociraptor vs Protoceratops Velociraptor While not the Deinonychus/Utahraptor sized predators of the JP Trilogy, Velociraptor was still fierce. These 6 ft long, 100 lb killers sported a 3 inch sickle shaped claw on the second digit on each foot. Plus 80 teeth over an inch long! Protoceratops While not as big as their later cousins, Protoceratops was still bigger than Velociraptor. They were about 9 ft long and weighed as much as 450-500 lbs. Their beaks and frilled heads could be used as weapons if need be. Fight A trio of Velociraptors are scouting their new hunting grounds. They lost 2 pack members in a fight to gain this territory and they want to make sure it was worth it. The remaining group consists of an alpha male, his mate, and her sister. As they move along the top of a sand dune, they look down the slope to see a lone, bull Protoceratops. The raptors are mildly hungry and decide to go for it. 2 of the raptors rush in, right in front of the ceratopsian. The old bull is a combat veteran and knows this tactic. He knows a third raptor is going to come in from behind. He charges the pair in front of him just as the third leaps for him. The 2 raptors scatter and the other lands on nothing but sand. He looks up to see the bull charging straight for him. The male raptor gets back up and tries to get away, but it's too late. The bull slams his head right into the side of the raptor, sending him flying. As the injured male raptor tries to get up, his mate runs in and slashes the Protoceratops' flank with her hand claws. The bull roars in pain and turns to attack the alpha female. Just then, her sister leaps into action, literally. She is on the back of the bull, raking her claws down his side and biting the back of his neck. He begins to buck and is able to throw her off, but not before he has sustained massive injury. The alpha male has now recovered from his fall and is attacking. Like the female, he jumps on the bull. But due to his injured leg, he lands on the side of the bull, not the back. The weight of the raptor pushes the bull over onto his side. He then employs his beak as a weapon. He grabs the alpha male's wrist, breaking numerous bones. The male raptor screeches in pain. The screech is heard for miles around. A large, 40 foot long Tarbosaurus hears the screech and decides to investigate. Meanwhile, the raptor and bull continue to do battle. The females are unsure of what to do. The bull lets go, but chomps back down again almost immediately. Suddenly, the bull feels a horrible pain in his stomach. The raptor has thrust his killing claw directly into the gut of the Protoceratops. The raptor continues to bite and claw at the bull, while the bull bites down on the raptor's wrist repeatedly. For what appears to be no reason, the female raptors begin to shriek. The alpha male follows their gaze up to the top of the sand dune. There, standing at the top, is the ominous shape of a massive Tarbosaurus. The tyrannosaur roars down at the smaller predators and the ceratopsian. However, things are about to get much worse. The sand dune begins to give way beneath the 5 ton weight of the Tarbosaurus. The dune collapses and sends the tyrannosaur tumbling down. The alpha male and bull Protoceratops look up to see the collapsing dune come down on top of them and bury them alive. Paralyzed with fear, the female raptors stand immobilized as the falling tyrannosaur lands on top of them, crushing them beneath his weight. For a moment, everything is silent. Then the Tarbosaurus painfully gets up and looks around at the carnage he indirectly caused. He moves on, limping with a broken leg. Millions of years later, the sands of Mongolia will reveal a snapshot into the prehistoric world with the discovery of the Fighting Dinosaurs. Winner- None The exact reason of how this occurred is unknown. In the end, it was most likely a freak event or accident like the one depicted here. There are however, multiple events or accidents that could have produced this result. Next time on Clash of Contemporaries One of the most famous rivalries ever! The terror of the Jurassic, Allosaurus, was perfectly suited for taking on big game. But in the Jurassic world, that game often fought back. The age old rivalry between Allosaurus and Stegosaurs, like it's never been seen before! Only on Clash of Contemporaries!

How did Tarbo get up, he has super tiny arms, smallest compared to body size of any Trannosaur.

He was on his side, rolled onto his stomach, and lifted himself up with his legs. That's why it was painful for him to get up.

Nice! I like that you attributed the mysterious dune collapse to the Tarbosaurus.

Thanks. I figured it was a possibility that was not really considered. Nothing natural about it. Basically, bad luck.

I saw an episode of dinosaur planet (I think), where the two were fighting, and the dune collapsed on them after a rain storm. Nice idea on how it could have happened.

Jack of all trades. Master of none

i have a comment on this post, but not an opinion. maybe it will shed light on the unknown reason for the fossil. anyone see an old show quite a few years back on animal planet about lions where a young sub adult lion was being chased off by dominant males? he freaked out and would do anything for his life, even the researchers said it was bizarre... he went into a huge floodplain that was reduced to thick mud. the other male lions would not chase him because they knew they would get stuck and die, but that poor little young male stuck it out and kept getting more stuck and deeper into mud. ( makes me think of never ending story and the poor horse). luckily he DID get away... no small teenage lion should have survived an attack from 2 large adult males, but he did... by risking death in another way. perhaps the death in the fossil you showed was another freak occurrence from a smart animal on either side?
