A Second Chance
Three days have passed since Bruiser and Mag died. Star and Brush are having trouble surviving. The brothers had to leave their old oasis for another one they’ve been to on occasion before. They haven’t eaten a lot for a while and are having trouble finding water. But they are surviving. Star and Brush are resting when a lizard comes across them. Star perks up, knowing this lizard would make a good meal. He gets up and begins to circle around it. This way, he cuts off the lizard’s retreat. Brush comes in from behind. The lizard looks from one brother to the next, unsure of what to do. Star leaps forward and plants his foot on the back of the lizard, holding it in place. Brush then comes in and bites the struggling lizard on the head and pulls back. He tosses the head away and the brothers begin to feed. As they finish the carcass, they move on. They need to find water and soon. They head a few miles east. They vaguely remember there being a watering hole there and decide it’s worth it. When they arrive, they have the whole pond all to themselves. They begin to quench their thirst immediately. This accomplished, the brothers start to play, something they haven’t done in a while.
After a few hours of play, Star and Brush are very tired and rest. They curl up in some bushes and try to got to sleep. Brush falls asleep immediately, but Star has a little more trouble. Suddenly, he catches whiff of something approaching the pond. He scans the area to see what it was. But it was more than one something. Sickle and the raptor gang approach the pond to quench their thirst. It’s the whole gang except for the alpha female who is back at the nests, watching her eggs. The gang is over twenty members strong. Star hopes they don’t notice him and Brush. But that hope is soon shattered. Brush starts to wake up and when he sees the Velociraptors, he lets out a cry for help, forgetting their parents are gone. The raptors hear him and head for the bushes. Sickle towers over the brothers and snarls at them. As he leans down to kill them, another dinosaur slams into him and sends Sickle flying. That other dinosaur was Vega. The raptor gang screeches at Vega and the Alectrosaurus roars back. Sickle gets up and shakes his head a bit in an effort to get his focus back. He looks at his gang and gives the signal to retreat. He’s dealt with Vega before and knows he’s a fierce fighter. As the raptors leave, Vega looks at the young Tarbosaurus’. Star and Brush roll over in a sign of respect. Vega nods in approval then motions for them to follow him. Star and Brush exchange glances, then follow.
About an hour later and they are in Vega’s territory. It’s about fourteen square miles of desert dotted with a number of oasis’. He leads the brothers to the largest oasis, right in the center of his territory. Small animals are everywhere here and there is a decent sized watering hole. It’s the perfect place for Star and Brush to live. While not the ideal situation, it’s better than nothing. Star and Brush finally have someone who can help take care of them and a new home.
As night approaches, Star and Brush curl up to go to sleep. Vega sleeps a few yards away. With Vega watching over them, they will have a peaceful night and get plenty of sleep. Life is finally looking up for the brothers.
