Well, in honor of Day of the Dinosaur, here is Part 2 of The World Beneath... The World Beneath Part 2 Location: Massive river 12 miles from the cave As the team rests by the river, Brian gets up and walks over to the water. Then, he makes his way to a nearby tree and, using his hatchet, cuts off a branch. “What are you doing,” Led inquired. “I saw some fish in there. I wanna see if we can catch any for lunch,” Brian replied. Taking the branch, he tied a length of line to it and added a hook. Then, after overturning a few rocks, adds a worm. After admiring his handiwork, Brian makes his way to the bank of the river. After a little while, he catches a freshwater cousin of the oceanic fish the Coelacanth. The fish measures nearly three feet. After seeing Brian’s luck, Led gets up and makes a rod of his own and joins Brian. Before long, between the two of them, they have half a dozen fish, the smallest still over a foot in length. While they were fishing, John made a small fire to cook the fish and Greg got some chips out of his backpack to add as a side. “Great idea Brian,” John commented between bites. “Yeah, smart thinking,” added Led. “Thanks guys,” Brian said blushing. Just then, a deafening screech fills the air. The four men look up to see their old friend the Spinosaurus charging forward. “Run,” John yelled. Everyone grabs their stuff as quickly as possible and makes a break for it. The spinosaur is steadily gaining on the team. While running, they pass a few very startled Dryosaurus’. “Look,” Led shouts. “I see it. Trees up ahead,” John confirmed. As the team enters the trees, the spinosaur suddenly becomes more cautious. Eventually, after they make it a considerable distance away, he turns around and heads the other direction. “What’s his problem,” asked Greg. “Yeah, he easily could have kept coming,” added Brian. “Hey, look over there,” Led says pointing to the right. There, about ten yards away, a nest sits. The eggs are oval shaped and are arranged in a near perfect circle. A few yards from the eggs is a tall rock spire at the edge of a cliff. The group walks over and peers over just to find out they can’t even see the bottom. Then, they turn around and walk back to the nest. “Must be another dinosaur’s territory,” John decided. “Makes sense. I’ve seen a similar thing happen with wolves while hunting in Alaska,” concurred Led. “Well if that thing is nervous about coming in here, then I sure don't’ wanna stick around,” Brian said. “Yeah, let’s keep moving,” John agreed, making a mental note of the location of the nest. Location: Open Plains about 8 miles from the cave As the group was walking, they came across a herd of Titanosaurus’ feeding on the plains. The giant herbivores were quite content and everything is peaceful. “Let’s take a break. I wanna watch the sauropods for a bit,” John said. “Ok, works for me,” agreed Brian. The team watches as the Titanosaurus’ great necks sweep across the ground like an oversized vacuum cleaners. The juveniles play and scamper about between the legs of their much larger parents without a care in the world. “Now that’s a beautiful sight,” Greg exclaimed. “You got that right,” agreed Led. After watching the sauropods for another half hour, the group finally moves on. While walking, they come across a very interesting sight. As they round a corner in the forest, they come across the Spinosaurus feeding on the carcass of an iguanodont. He’s too busy eating and does not notice them. “Just stay quiet and give him a wide berth,” John whispered. The team manages to slip away unseen. As night approached again, the group started to build another fire. Once again, they post a guard throughout the night. This time however, nothing bothers them. Location: Forest edge roughly 3 miles from the cave As the four men exited the forest, they came across a herd of feeding hadrosaurs, Edmontosaurus to be specific. The elephant sized giants peacefully feed on the ground level plants while on all fours and rear up on their back legs to feed on the tree tops. Then, a loud call goes out and the herd is suddenly alert. A single raptor stands on a hilltop about forty yards away. Upon seeing this, the herd stampedes. “Quickly, try to get up a tree,” suggests Brian. The group climbs up a tree and stops when they’re about thirty feet off the ground. They watch as the hadrosaurs run and raptors come in on all sides. Pretty soon, the raptors separate a subadult and begin to attack it. The young hadrosaur is inexperienced and has a hard time fighting back. Even still, he manages to take out two raptors with his tail before succombing to his injuries. The raptor pack then begins to tear the carcass apart, ravenously swallowing chunks of flesh. Then, out of nowhere, a pair of predatory Ceratosaurus show up. Their three horned faces and massive teeth, combined with their large size, make for a fearsome appearance. The raptor pack makes a stand and shrieks at the oncoming predators while ruffling their feathers in an effort to look bigger. The Ceratosaurus’ see through the ruse and continue marching toward the raptors. Eventually, the Deinonychus back down. After about an hour, the Ceratosaurus’ have eaten their fill and the team can come down. “That was something wasn’t it,” remarked John. “It was like a trip I took to Africa once. Pack of wild dogs brought down a zebra, but were forced to back down to a pair of hyenas,” added Led. “Well, it’s been great and all, but I think we should head out of here,” Greg said. “You’re right. We’ve been down here for a long time and it’s time to go. Let’s head back to the cave,” John declared. Location: Cave entrance As the four men near the cave, they look out at the vast landscape one last time. They may never see this place again. “It’s certainly been quite an adventure,” Brian exclaimed. “It sure has been. I think I’m gonna miss this place,” Led added. “I’ll admit, it was better than I expected,” admitted Greg. “I told you it would be fun,” John said with a grin. “We didn’t exactly get off on a good start, but you’re right, it was fun,” Greg said. The team turns to enter the cave, but stop short. Something’s in there. As they stare at the darkness in the cave, two large red eyes appear. “Oh no,” Brian said in a hushed voice. Just then, the cave and rock explode and the Spinosaurus stands up and roars. The team bolts down the trail with the spinosaur directly behind them. Brian, Led, and Greg begin to turn left, but John stops and yells for them to stop too. “This way, we need to go right,” he shouts. Not wanting to waste any time, the other three quickly obey and follow John. “Why are we going this way,” Led asks. “Just trust me,” John yells. The four men dodge trees and boulders as they run. Eventually, they reach the forest with the spinosaur just a few steps behind them. They then enter a clearing and John stops and backs up against a tree. The other three stop too, but are extremely confused. “What are you doing,” Brian yells. “Just wait. In a few seconds, all hell is gonna break loose,” John says calmly. “I hope you know we have very little ammo left after our run in with those raptors,” Led says. “I know,” John says flatly. After a few seconds, the Spinosaurus appears. He calmly walks over to his trapped prey in a truly villainous fashion. He stops a few feet from the four men. He then snarls and lets out a terrifying roar. But his roar is overshadowed by the earth-shaking bellow that is heard next. Then, the ground begins to vibrate. The Spinosaurus looks around, concern and fear clearly written on his face. John grins as the other three look around to see where the roar came from. Pretty soon, the most notorious flesh-eater of all time enters the clearing, Tyrannosaurus rex. With another loud roar, the bull Tyrannosaurus charges the Spinosaurus, slamming his head into the spinosaur’s flank. The Spinosaurus staggers back and shrieks at the tyrannosaur. The ground begins to shake again as a female Tyrannosaurus walks in and takes up a defensive position beside the nest of eggs. “This was their nest,” Greg whispers with utter disbelief in obvious in his tone. “Yes. I knew spinosaur was nervous about coming here so I went on a hunch and looks like I was right,” John replied. The bull tyrannosaur charges the Spinosaurus again. The spinosaur is ready and swings one of his massive arms. He slashes the tyrannosaur’s shoulder open and the tyrant dinosaur roars in pain. The spinosaur then lunges forward, his jaws snapping shut inches from the Tyrannosaurus’ face. The tyrannosaur takes advantage of the spinosaur’s close proximity and attacks. He bites down on the back of the Spinosaurus’ neck with bone crushing force. The spinosaur screeches in agony. Then the Tyrannosaurus, still holding the spinosaur in his jaws, does a three-sixty and lets go. The momentum sends the Spinosaurus stumbling back and he smashes into the nearby rock spire. The rock gives way beneath his massive weight. The Spinosaurus loses his balance and falls off the cliff to his death, roaring all the way. The bull Tyrannosaurus walks to the edge of the cliff and roars in triumph. Then, he turns and goes back to his mate. With it all over, the group slips away undetected. Location: What was the cave entrance As they team nears the cave, they turn around again and look out at the landscape before them. No one speaks for fear of disturbing the peace. Then, they silently turn around and walk through the cave entrance. Once they reach the spot where the wall of rock that had concealed this world had given way, they stop. “Alright guys, load your guns,” John finally said. “Why,” Brian asked while they load the guns. “We can’t let anything go in there or let anything come out. We need to seal this place off,” John said firmly. “But what about all the things we could accomplish down there,” Brian replied. “Yeah John. Don’t worry, we have the best intentions,” Led adds. “Best intentions? Some of the greatest mistakes in history were made with the best intentions,” John stated grimly. The other three slowly nodded in agreement. After this, they raise their guns and each pull the trigger. The bullets cause the rocks to give way and the tunnel becomes sealed off. With this accomplished, they turn around and walk away. Location: Plane en route to DC As the team flies back to DC, John reflects on what they went through. After much thinking, he finally decides he was right to seal off the mine shaft. “No one should ever disturb the world beneath,” he thinks. Epilogue The darkened mineshaft is silent except for the occasional drop of water. The wall of collapsed rocks stands like a silent sentinel. Then, one rock slips and falls to the ground. The whole wall then gives way. As the dust settles, two yellow, reptilian eyes appear. Recap of the predators from Part 1... Thanks guys. And Delta, I probably took a half hour deciding as to whether or not I should have a Rex vs Spino battle. But it's just too classic and I couldn't resist. Sorry if you don't like it, but I did and wanted to have it :)

Well, I think it could have just been a couple roars and maybe the rex slams the Spino off the edge.

Indeed. If I do a sequel, it won't be for a while though. I have The Fight To Survive: A World Away to do and I have an idea for another story that takes precedence over a sequel for The World Beneath.

9/10. Actually, 9.75/10. It would have scored a perfect 10 but because of Spino fighting Rex, I docked a point. Then I added some back because of the lack of controversy this time. The story was well written and entertaining and I hope for a sequel! On another note, there's a lake in Port Angeles (ferry trip away from my house) that has a cave by it. I remember looking down into it and seeing nothingness forever, even with a flashlight. I used to be afraid of it but now I want to go find a Spinosaurus!
