A rabid dog is too powerful an opponent for your chicken. It's intimidation ability is obviously working. Try battling the local sparrow population to level up first. 

My chicken is still having somre trouble, the poor bastard gets scared whenever I challenge it against the stray wild Germand Sheperd with rabies outside my neighborhood.
