Titanovenator: Prolouge

The day was bright and warm with steady winds making the heat less stifling to endure. This would make the journey somewhat easier considering that he was still miles away from the territory he believed to be vacant. So with the sun beginning to rise further into the sky it was finally time to finish this long and argues trek that began when his progenitors made it clear that it was time to survive on his own. So here he was, walking a steady pace towards what he hoped was salvation.

As he approaches the crest of a hill he hears a loud and pungent bellow that sweeps across the grassy landscape. It was obviously a challenge for the territory he now stood in, but he couldn’t understand if the challenger knew he was here or if it was a routine warning of the territory’s current resident. He had not walked hundreds of miles and eaten scraps for months to be scared off by some challenger to HIS future territory. He walked to the crest of the hill and with every ounce of his being let out a roar that reverberates through the plains below.

Within minutes there is a response and from this roar it is clear that his contender won’t make this an easy territory claiming. So he begins his decent onto the plains and well after the sun rises into its pinnacle in the sky. He finds where the plains meet a forest that appears rich with life, if he can kick out this contender then he will be in a very good position for his foreseeable future. He may be young but he learned that the best way to deal with an opponent is to get them where you want them. After searching the small forest for a time he finds a wide clearing cutting through the forest that disappears into the horizon in both directions.

With the battlefield chosen the male lets out a menacing and deafening roar that can be heard for miles in every direction. A roar sounds from behind him; his opponent was tracking him since first contact. And judging from the closeness of the roar, his opponent would be there in minutes, so he prepares for the fight that will determine his future. It takes far less time then he thought for his opponent to arrive which is slightly surprising given that it sounded as if this other claimant were still miles away mere minutes ago. The forest explodes outwards so suddenly that he can’t help but flinch at the sudden assault on his senses, but he quickly recomposes himself as he is now confronted by the supposed owner of this territory.

His opponent was a male like him but smaller and less muscled, most likely he was sent off early for being such a sickly and weak specimen. To him it was a miracle this creature was even still holding such prime territory given the overabundance of life in the area. But that was not of importance at the moment, this territory will be his after this battle no matter the cost. He skips the usual displays of dominance and goes on the attack immediately, catching the other male completely off guard. Within seconds he has the smaller male in his jaws squealing and squirming as he bites down harder and harder, he decides that mercy for this poor creature is the least he can grant it.

With a single fluid motion he puts all of his force into yanking the other male forward; straight into a field of small rocks and boulders. The effect is almost instantaneous as the male’s feet are caught by debris and is pitched forward under its forward momentum. There’s a sickening crack and slurping noise as the males skull rams into the side of a boulder that likely weighed as much as it did. Satisfied that the smaller male was dead, he begins picking his way through the rocky field toward his fallen opponent. As he arrives at the corpse he notices that the skull is visibly shattered in many areas, as well as much of its forward spine protruding from the neck and back.

He felt no remorse for killing the other male; he may have even performed a kindness killing the poor creature. Several hours later after distributing the carcass as a warning to other carnivores in the area, he sets about marking the newly acquired territory. The sun is falling behind the distant landscape leaving twisting shadows by time he is done with his territory marking; there is only one thing that needs to be done before he can rest. At the top of a gently rising outcropping he sucks in as much air as possible and releases a long and menacing roar far louder than even he thought he was capable of. But this place was his now, he was the king of this shred of the world, and he will defend that right to the death and all will learn to fear him… a Titanovenator.
