The REAL problem with the CGI in Jurassic World

So obviously by now we have seen the Jurassic World trailer dozens of times by now. Of course, everyone noticed one thing- the CGI in the film is definitely not as realistic as the dinosaurs and CGI used in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Now, some people find this to be a problem, which is somewhat understandable. How are we supposed to enjoy a Jurassic Park Movie if not even the special effects live up to the original.

Others like me don't care as long as it is detailed and the movie itself is good and not a dissapointment.

*Looks at Jurassic Park 3

First, let's look at the Shark and the mososaur.

This is when we should see why the CGI is a problem. When I looked at the trailer along with others, we could immediately tell the shark and the mososaur was fake. The animals were very detailed, probably took hundreds of hours to animate, and took a whole lot of work to do.

The whole time I was watching this, I was thinking that it was fake, so I had to make myself hide the fact that it was fake and just say to myself, wow that's fake but well animated so I guess I can let it slide.

Now let's think about Jurassic Park and The Lost World.

Whenever we see a dinosaur in the movie, especially the raptors and the T-Rex, the animation and the robots were made so REAL that chances are you DIDN'T think about that the fact that they are fake. You just thought "Holy sh*t... That is a f**king dinosaur!!!"

THAT is the REAL problem with the CGI- we need to think about the fact of WHY the effects of the original were superior; because when you saw the effects like I did in the first film, you never really thought about the fact that it was all fake- it was and IS very realistic. it's like real dinosaurs were trained to be in the movie.

With the trailer in Jurassic World, all that I and a lot of others thought about is that it's all fake and CGI so we need to prepare ourselves to just enjoy the movie while thinking "Hey, that's well animated and all, but it's just so fake."

That is why I think the CGI, when it is getting the final touches before release needs to be realistic as possible- so when we see Jurassic World, we think about how REAL it is, not how FAKE it is. We should think when we see the Mososaur "Wow, that's an actual aquatic prehistoirc animal right there!!!" Not "Oh, that's a well animated water dinosaur there, fake, but still cool."

Note that I know Mososaurs aren't dinosaurs.

That is the point I am tyring to make about the CGI, when it is finished it needs to be real so it could ahve the same effect the original had. I also just wanted to show really why the orignal had really good longlasting effects. It was done so we thought for a while it was real, not that it was all done with technology.

Sorry if I didn't say these things clearly, stressed out and felt like making a hopefully interesting topic. Anyways, please leave a reply, I'll be interested in reading your thoughts!

The director already stated the cgi isn't finished... and alot of films teasers have unfinished cgi in them... He also confirmed there are gonna be anamatronics as well as an actual jurassic world gate, the cgi one in the trailer was just for the trailer itself....

MemberAllosaurusDec-13-2014 12:46 PM

I know that, I even said it in the discussion. Even then the CGI is gonna be pretty close to the trailer and let's be honest- we're probably going to easily tell right away it's fake by looking at it.

im sure it will be ten times better then the cgi in the teaser regardless... as for realism, im pretty sure you can count on it to an extent.... we already know its gonna be fake.... and i am not gonna care really at all because even though i like high quality special effects in films i watch.... i have a much higher expectation on how everything plays out and utilized aswell as the story.... Same thing with video games, the graphics dont matter as much as the gameplay mechanics and the story... You gotta give it time before you pass judgement like that really... IMO.... I respect your opinion but im just gonna disagree....

I don't think you were getting the point I was trying to make. I'm just saying why people foudn the special effects for this dissapointing compared to the first movie. And when it comes to a movie, special effects do matter. If the dinosaurs were just chickens made to look bigger onscreen, would you watch it?

I'm just saying in most cases special effects do matter in movies. I even said in the discussion I don't care if the CGI is like the way it was in the trailer; I said I'm looking to see how the movie will play out but I still wanted to clarify why it's important to ahve it look as realistic as possible.

Of course it's gonan be fake but the effects in the first movie didn't look fake at all, with the small exception of the obvious robotic movements of the Triceratops. The T-Rex looked like a real one to me- I sure wasn't thinking it was fake while watching it- I was just thinking about how they brought life to a T-Rex.

For the trailer, I was thinking that it was very well done but still effect- it already is starting to lose the classic Jurassic Park effect on it.

I know the CGI is finished, but let's face reality, the CGI in the trailer is probably going to be close to the one in the film.

CGI can be exceptionally well done, it can be overdone, it can be bad.

VERY Good CGI? Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Overdone CGI? The Hobbit

Bad CGI? Tons of movies. Transformers, Nija Turtles, etc.

Video Games are ENTIRELY different with effects- There are no actors, not real life sets- it's all computer generated. EVen then I don't like over-the-top realism in vidoe games- In my opinion Video games are to take you into a different world, not the one we live in.

That's why I like a lot of Nintendo games- they use good effects but unreal ones to take you to different worlds.

Very good points! I actually stated that a while ago... now everyone knows CGI is used, so it must be fake! (and of course it is)...

When JP came out in theaters, the CGI was actually worse than what showed in the trailer... but it was so believable for people that they started thinking wheter or not they really filmed alive dinosaurs... (myself included :3).

I feel like nowdays, just because people KNOW it's fake, they have to SAY it looks fake... which is stupid.

Also considering the fact that arguing is pointless... the movie's not even out yet...

Well I'm not that type of person who always says it looked fake; when I saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes I was thinking how real it looked.

The CGI looked fake in the trailer; I know the movie's not out yet and I know the CGI is unfinished but let's eb honest, we're going to be able to tell right away it's fake most likely. At least, that's how I feel. Regardless the effects are excellent but still.

^I agree. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (wow that's a lot to say) had AMAZING CGI! Hopefully JW can make theirs more realistic. Good points BTW.

I like the statements you've made, Lets build on those, So, Please, Consider the following

The CGI Is indeed unfinished, But it should be Far enough along since we wrapped up filming back in like, July, That it should be hard to descern Real, From CG.

I for one, Also find the Extensive amount of CG Solely in the trailer alone, Rather Disturbing.

They used Green Screen for Most of the Control room shots, As compared to the Original, When it was an Actual Monitor that Projected the Island getting hit by the Storm.

The CGI Is much more Impressive then the First film. But there's so much of it, The Nostalgia is kinda lost.

We've seen only a Single Animatronic Leak so far.

We aslo have a huge gap here inbetween Release, And Filming Finishing, Most of which will be used on The CG Models, Which would Infer a Large amount of CGI In this film.

If any of you recall the CG-To-AMT (Computer generated Images to Animatronics) In JP3, You can 87% of the time, Discern the Animatronics, From the CGI...

There's even a seen, Where the Spino is Mis-shaded to it's enviroment.

That was of most recent.

We've come a far way from 2001, But what if what we see in the Trailer, Is One of the Cuts nearing the Final cut.

Why would you also Publish something for the World to see, If it wasn't finished?

Thank you, For considering the following.

SCI-FI KING25 - The VFX doesn't look unrealistic at all, is looks very realistic. Just a little bit fake maybe. But yeah, they're gonna work on that. The VFX guys are the same ones that made for Jurassic Park and for example Avavar wich had amazing effects, I think it's gonna get a lot better. Also the effects are made for 3D and for a theater.

Just remember this too. Some of this footage will not be in the movie. All movies create footage just for trailers alone! Colin Trevorrow even said the scene with the Jurassic is not in the movie. That they have built a Jurassic World gate like the first one, and the rest of it will be CGI

Transformers: Age of Extinction did the same. In the first trailer at the end we saw Grimlock charging Optimus Prime. We see Optimus Prime yelling, no words said, and smacking Grimlock in the face sending him flying. Then it turns to different angle, in which is crashing towards the camera. In the film it was much different. In the film Grimlock is charging Optimus Prime, which has some added footage such as the camera zooming in a little flame coming out of his mouth. The camera swichs to Optimus and he says "We're giving freedom!!! Huh!" And hits him, sending him flying. The camera switchs to Grimlock crashing towards us, sending dirt flying. In the background we see, Slug, Scorn, and Strafe, watching the battle, and theu weren't in the trailer.

Alright, I've got that off my chest. I do believe that it should look real. I'm not saying it's not good CGI, it's very good. Maybe a bit more detail is all it needs. And remember too, they may not have been working on just footage for the trailer, they have more footage to work than just the the trailer.

FERNANDOSAURUS REX - I understand exactly what you mean! The original Jurassic Park's animals were mezmerizing! I certainly hope that Jurassic World's cast of dinosaurs will be fine-tuned to present the same sense of actuality as the original! Of course, you know I'm always pleased by...something real. ;)

Am I the only one who thinks that the CGI we've seen so far is far superior to any non-CGI dinosaurs we saw in the original movies? Consider that every iconical scene from the original (with the exception of the kitchen scene) was made with CGI dinosaurs. The T.rex breaking out and then roaring at the end of the movie were by far the most iconical scenes of that movie and are to date some of the greatest icons of Jurassic Park and Dinosaurs as a whole and were made with CGi (that wasn't even close to the levels of CGI we can achieve now).

Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common. The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in. -Brom-

the problem is the movie is still in post production. the CGI looked a'ight i guess, but touch-ups, revisions, etc are guaranteed before the movies release in 2015. seeing how far cgi ias come (e.g. dawn of the planet of the apes) i can guarantee this won't be a let down

Thanks to everyone to take the time to comment!

@Gojira2K- Even then the CGI for the new Transformers was terrible. It looked extremely fake, very detailed but still very fake. I am sure the CGI will get better for Jurassic World but what I am tyring to say is that it needs the same feel the Original Jurassic Park and The Lost World did.

@Something Real- Yes, that's what I am trying to get across- this movie needs to have very close effects of the original, which is what I fear will not happen...

@Paden- Very good points, and I did make sure to consider the following. I can't believe they really used green screen for the control room... Seriously? No wonder it seemes so shiny and... just unreal a bit. I mean the control room in Jurassic Park was so real because it was real, and now I'm being told CGI is being used for a computer room...

*Sighs

I was also suspicious of that- only ONE leak of an animiatronic being used. I have a feeling that was put there to make fans not worry about the CGI< anyway...

They are going for nostalgia effect and it is being lost, I mean for Pete's sake the control room is fake...

Well a lot of times unfinished things are put for the world to see, such as videoo games, medicine, music albums, books, etc.

@UCMP- I'm sorry but I can't see why you would think the CGI dinosaurs are superior to the real ones in Jurassic Park, I mean the CGI is too shiny, unrealisitc, it goes on and on. Even the robot dinosaurus had more detail in my opinion...

I know a lot of the iconical scenes was used by using CGI- so why can't a trailer 20 years ahead be far more superior? Just some food for thought.

@Carnosaur- I mean I am sure it isn't going to be a let down but I'm just worried it won't be close to the effects of the original- still I will look to enjoy the movie itself, not the effects mainly, but I hope you get what I mean.

Seems like you just don't like CGI in general. There are always the people who like practical effects more and there is something to be had knowing that a real thing is moving in front of the camera, but we're in an era that is moving away from that to the idea of CGI which brings a lot more positives than negatives in most cases.

Was the CGI the greatest ever, no but I don't think it's worse than the CGI used in the original.

I'm not against CGI in general. I loved the CGI in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, for example. The CGI in the trailer is worse than the orignal, but it is not finished yet.

It's just the fact that you can tell it's fake.

The Cgi doesn't bother me, nothing is real these days. lol But that's a different topic.

Anyways, like said, all that matters to me is the movie's plot itself.

Btw, I think jp3 was good and wasn't a disappointment.

I think they reason most of the cgi in JP still holds up to today is the fact that Spielberg knew how to use lighting. Some off the most realistic cgi in JP was in scenes where the lighting was dark and gritty, trex attack, raptor kitchen attack. Spielberg really tried to avoid shots that exposed the cgi to the full light of day for extended periods of time. This is most shown probably the most in the initial brachiosaurus scene. As much as i love this scene, as it's probably one of the greatest movie moments in history, I'm not going to kid myself by saying that it looks realistic. I say all that to say we've really only seen so far one big cgi moment in JW, being the mosasaur and it is in the full light of day. We have to hope that trevorrow takes advantage of lighting with other cgi moments in the movie and redeems it. Because if we were just shown a trailer of JP having not seen it and they just show the brachiosaurus scene than we would be complaining about the quality of the cgi........I guess I just want to wait till i see the whole movie in its finished form before I pass judgement on the a quality and use of the cgi.

MemberCompsognathusJan-04-2015 4:16 AM

i think this topic is BS

How can you say that shark dont look real. you can still see the moistness on its skin from the water. And the mosasaurus looks quality when it comes out the water. only thing i dont like a bout THAT  is its over size.

As for who ever agrees that the cgi isnt as good a s the original CGI must be smoking something. The brachiosaurus looks well dated now! and the cgi in the JW trailer the textures of both the apatosaurus and the gallis already looks beter and its just the trailer.

Dawn of apes used a lot of go motion with the animations matching to humans thats why it looked so good. and even the textures of the fur on the apes was incredibly differetn just from the trailer to its proper release! THE CGI WILL BE FINE!

AS FOR THE ANIMATRONICS the reasons these animals looked so groundbreaking in jp1 is NOT because the cgi is better. its impossible for it to better as tech has moved foreward. it is because you were younger. WHEN you are a child everything is real. I was 6 when this movie came out and when i saw a clip on the news i thought they had discovered dinosaurs. It felt real because CGI had never been used.  besides its impossible to creat a mosasaur enclosure with a stadium of people in hawaii on a set OF COURSE IT WILL BE CGI !!! i swear most of the people on here dont think about it. It is incredibly difficult to make a movie as it is yet alone blend in the CGI plates of foreground and back ground and for us to believe this world exists. cut them some slack you have a JP4 movie guys!!!!!!!!

DURP004 i agree with ur comment!

stop moaning about the cgi people and get over it. ANimitronics will be used for close ups only. untill we get a close up. It will be CGI

I feel like the problem isn't necessarily that Jurassic World's CGI isn't as good as the CGI seen in Jurassic Park, it's what we've come to compare visual effects to based on current films. Back when Jurassic Park came out, CGI was very new and audience's hadn't seen anything like that before - so of course it seemed very real. Even the CGI in other hits from that era, and even before like Terminator 2. Today, everything is CGI and practical effects are rarely used. Thankfully Jurassic World will use a mixture of both but I think people are being slightly overly judgemental when it comes to judging this film's CGI usage based on one trailer. The CGI isn't even finished yet. I feel like the visual effects will be polished and impressive when the film hits theaters. Hard to compare a WIP with a finished product.
