Chapter 4
Death and Destruction
With the sandstorm closing in on the Tarbosaurus family, Bruiser and Mag feel they need to get their children to shelter. They find a small oasis and have Star and Brush hide in the bushes. The plants will offer them some protection. Just as the brothers are getting settled, a thunderous roar booms through the air.
Redeye is, like the sandstorm, closing in on the Tarbosaurus family. Redeye is an abnormally large Zhuchengtyrannus. He stretches over forty feet in length and weighs a terrifying seven tons. The reason for his large size is not known, but he enjoys being so large. He gets his name from his bloodshot left eye. The eye was injured in a fight long ago and was once a mark of shame. Now, it’s a mark of respect and shows that Redeye is a fearless fighter. However, Redeye did not earn this respect. He took it. Redeye does not just kill for the need to feed. He kills because he likes it. As he nears the Tarbosaurus family, his adrenaline begins to rise as he prepares for yet another kill. Redeye knows that he can use the storm to his advantage. He will.
As the cloud of sand and dust gathers, Bruiser can just barely make out the silhouette of Redeye. He and Mag tense up and prepare for the battle they know is coming. Mag does not personally know what Redeye is capable of, but Bruiser does. Bruiser lost his sister to the monstrous Z-Tyrannus. He doubts his ability to defeat Redeye, but he’ll try. Both he and Mag are prepared to lay down their lives if they have to. Redeye is now only twenty yards away, but he stops. Bruiser and Mag each let out a loud roar. Redeye roars back. The battlelines have been drawn. There will be no retreat.
Redeye makes the first move. He goes through a series of mock charges to try and confuse Bruiser and Mag. Bruiser is quick to action and lunges. Redeye gets out of the way and slashes Bruiser’s face with his teeth. Bruiser stands back and roars with blood streaming down his face. Redeye charges Bruiser now that he’s distracted, but before he reaches him, Mag slams her head into the Redeye’s flank, knocking him off course. Redeye regains his footing quickly and lunges for Mag. She leaps out of the way, and as she does, swings her tail with tremendous force. Redeye gets slammed in the lower jaw and loses a number of teeth. Redeye roars in pain and attacks again. This time, he lands a blow. Redeye clamps down on Mag’s shoulder with bone crushing force. She roars and struggles, but can’t get free. Then Bruiser charges in and grabs Redeye by the back of the neck. He yanks him off of Mag and throws him off to the side. Redeye roars loudly and charges. He slams into Bruiser at full speed, sending him to the ground. At the same time, he turns and smacks Mag across the face with his tail. The two Tarbosaurus’ fall to the ground. Redeye looks up to see the sandstorm beginning to surround them. He devises a plan to take out the Tarbosaurus’ and get out of there before he is buried in sand and dust. The parents begin to get up as the wind starts to pick up. Sand flies everywhere and visibility is reduced dramatically. Bruiser struggles to see where Redeye is and Mag does the same. Suddenly, Mag feels a horrible pain in her left leg. Redeye bites down hard on it and crushes a number of bones. He lets go and Mag falls as her broken leg gives out. Bruiser rushes over to help, but Redeye quickly disappears in the swirling torrent of sand and dust. Bruiser scans the area for any sign of Redeye. Then, without warning, Redeye repeats the attack and crushes Bruiser’s leg. Bruiser falls next to a panting Mag and can’t get up. Redeye, seeing that he has done what he intended to do, leaves before the storm gets worse. Bruiser and Mag struggle to get up, but they can’t. The damage is done. Mag looks to her mate, fear clearly in her eyes. Bruiser puts his head against her’s and they both close their eyes as they are slowly buried alive.
Star and Brush saw the whole thing. Anger begins to build up inside them. They want to go out and help their parents, but dare not go out in the middle of a sandstorm. No matter how much they hate it, the brothers must wait.
A few hours later, the storm finally subsides. Star and Brush leave the bushes and walk over to their parents. The sight is unbearable. Bruiser and Mag’s bodies lay side by side, almost entirely buried in sand. Star and Brush cry and mourn their parents. Then, they look around them and see their home destroyed by the storm. Star looks to Brush and Brush looks to Star. Finally, Star decides there’s nothing for them here. He looks at his parents one last time, then moves on. Brush does the same. They do not look back.
