As many of you know, an extremely poorly known spinosaur nicknamed "The Horror Mouth" was discovered at one point, but like every-frickin'-other awesome giant African carnivore (Saurophagus, Spinosaurus, Bahariasaurus, unnamed megalosaur) was destroyed in an allied bombing in Germany in 1944 before it could become famous or even be scientifically described. From what little information I've been able to dig up on it over my two year quest for knowledge regarding "The Horror Mouth", it appears it was discovered in 1944 in Niger, Africa and it would have lived alongside the comparably-sized Suchomimus. Some vertebrae also show it may have had a sail similar in relative size to that of the larger Spinosaurus.
Which is where my theory comes in.
With the revelation that the largest and possibly only Suchomimus specimen known is a subadult, I came up with a theory. The Horror Mouth may be an adult Suchomimus. The sail would have gotten taller throughout life and the teeth would have changed size. The projected adult size if Suchomimus matches perfectly with the estimated size of The Horror Mouth. My only problem with this theory is skull shape. The jaws of Suchomimus are thinner than those of The Horror Mouth and the teeth are more numerous.
The lower jaw of Horror Mouth is wider than the upper jaw at some points and vise versa.
Another theory I have is that The Horror Mouth simply never existed. Perhaps teeth of an adult specimen were found near the skull of a subadult and were attached to the drawn out reconstructed skull. For the reason that this theory would mean Suchomimus had the longest teeth of any known carnivore(~14 inches including the root) I disregard it.
Bonus News: DinoFights' sister's team is setting out on an expedition to Africa to attempt to find fossils of "The Horror Mouth", "The Snake Eater"(I requested it be named Serpentinethantus), Spinosaurus and any other dinosaurs in a few weeks.
What are your theories on/names for The Horror Mouth?

MemberCompsognathusJul-18-2013 2:04 PMIt's so hard to say with the only fossils being destroyed in WW 2.
The Dig- If any new species of large, theropod dinosaurs are discovered, I would just like to throw out some names...
Austratyrannus- The Southern Tyrant
Tyrannosuchus- The Tyrant Crocodile
Neocanthosaurus- New Spined Lizard
Megalovenator- Big Hunter
I'm 99.9 percent sure those are not taken ;)

MemberCompsognathusJul-18-2013 2:53 PMI think an appropriate name for the Horror Mouth would be "Phobodon", roughly meaning "fear tooth".

MemberCompsognathusJul-18-2013 3:15 PMThat would be good. I could see that working. Phobodon africanis
(africanis meaning (Africa for the species part)
The whole thing could mean- Fear tooth of Africa
Or something like that, haha

MemberTyrannosaurus RexJul-18-2013 4:27 PMThat would be pretty cool if DinoFights's sister's team found more Spino fossils. My opinion on Spino fossils is that the one that was discovered may have been from a really big Spino and was the only one that was tough enough to survive millions of years. That's just my thought on it though.
Jack of all trades. Master of none

MemberCompsognathusJul-18-2013 4:45 PMWait, I came up with Serpentinethantus, so if she finds it, and names it that, I would have named a dinosaur, technically. I always wanted to do that.
Ps. Horror mouth I will call Deinognathus, terrible jaw.
Pss. Rex Fan, Megalovenator mean great hunter. Megavenator mean big hunter. Megal means great.

Deltadromeus- Close enough, haha. Still sounds cool ;)

MemberCompsognathusJul-18-2013 6:42 PMI try to come up with dinosaur names. It helps when you want to make up your own dinosaur. And don't say you have never done that, because you have.

MemberCompsognathusJul-18-2013 6:46 PMOf course I have. The first name I came up with that was good was Tyrannosuchus americanis, the Tyrant Crocodile of America.
It was 40 ft long, 15 ft tall, and weighed 5 tons. The biggest predator of the Early Cretaceous in N. America. Competed with Acrocanthosaurus for food. It was a member of the allosaur family.
Looked kinda like this...

I got even more in depth with it, haha. But I don't wanna go on and on about it ;)
