Welcome ladies and gentleman, to my daily DinoFight. I always appreciate my loyal readers, but for those of you who are new, every day I pit two of the most formidable dinosaurs to ever exist against one another in a fight to the death (most of the time). Medium division, round 1, fight 3: Suchomimus vs Ampelosaurus Suchomimus Height: 13 feet Length: Possibly over 39 feet Weight: 5.5 tons Speed: 15 mph Diet: Fish, pterosaurs, small dinosaurs Weapons: Claws, bites Description: Suchomimus was actually a very large theropod. The 36 foot skeleton found was sub-adult and thus suggested the piscivore got even bigger, quite possibly topping 40 feet. Though not as adapted for land life as its larger cousin Spinosaurus, it wasn't as strictly a fish-eater as Baryonyx. Its jaws were slightly more robust and it had stronger teeth, suggesting it may have occasionally ambushed drinking dinosaurs from the cover of the water, earning its name meaning: crocodile mimic. It was also similar to crocodilians in the fact that it spent most of its life in water, up to 85 or 90 percent. Because of this, it didn't have to be heavily built like other giant theropods, and its main weapons were its long claws on its muscular arms. Ampelosaurus Height: 16.5 feet at shoulder, 19.5 feet at head Length: 50 feet Weight: 15 tons Speed: 8 mph Diet: Leaves from trees, high plants Weapons: Spiky armor, whip-like tail Description: At over 50 feet long and 15 tons, it may seem a bit large to be classed as "medium", but it was medium as far as sauropods go. Compared to the cow-sized Europasaurus, it was enormous, but compared to colossal Argentinosaurus in the large class, it was tiny. Therefore, it is medium. The titanosaur was perhaps the most famous armored sauropod after its cousin Saltasaurus, which was covered in bony bumps and plates. Ampelosaurus, however, was covered in spikes, providing an uncomfortable stab in the mouth for any predator daring enough to bite it. On top of the armor and giant size, however, it also had a whip-like tail that most sauropods did, which could smash a theropod's skull in a single strike. FIGHT! A mother Suchomimus fishes in the shallows of a river on Isla Sorna in the evening. She glances up for a moment to see her son playfully stomp around in the mud on the opposite bank. He chases a frog, not with the intent of killing it, but out of curiosity. His mother looks away again, unsuccessfully attempting to grab a carp that swam by. The juvenile Suchomimus trudges farther and farther away after the frog. After a few minutes, the mother looks up again, but her son is gone. She calls out to him but gets no response. She climbs out of the water and walks along the bank, calling out to him. Further down the stream, she hears a loud snap met with a high pitched cry. She runs down the river and sees her son laying on the ground, his jaw unnaturally bent. She would normally attack whatever had attacked her son, but it was an Ampelosaurus. The young male that whipped her son joins his herd again, taking away any hope she had of attacking him successfully. He has the markings of an alpha, having stripes down his cheeks and taller spines. What sets him apart from any other though is the missing armor plate on his side, lost in a battle with a Nanotyrannus. As the herd moves on, the Suchomimus toddler cries to his mother, standing up. His lower jaw hangs half limp and awkward. The mother, knowing he won't survive and will just hinder her, coldly turns him away. He sits alone on the river bed all night, doomed to starvation. ••••••• 19 years later, he sits at a watering hole upstream from the area he was abandoned. He somehow managed to survive, stealing kills from smaller animals and awkwardly eating them. His lower jaw is healed but deformed, protruding out a few inches and positioned to the right. He has stayed at this location nearly his entire life, catching fish and ambushing hadrosaurs. The watering hole is drying up and forcing him to move on. He walks downstream, pausing at the spot where his jaw was broken and his mother left him. He faintly remembers the incident thanks to InGen's intelligence mutation, and tries to recall it while looking for a fish. All that swim this time of year are fry, their parents having left back to sea. As he prepares to give up, he sees a silhouette a distance aways in the evening sun. He lowers himself down into the water, watching it as it prepares to cross the river. Strangely enough, it is an Ampelosaurus. He stares at the full grown sauropod. He notices something strange about it. The missing armor plate. The memories come back to him as he sees it. Overcome with what is best described as the dinosaur equivalent of emotion, he rushes forwards and digs his left claws into its left shoulder, his right claws stabbing into its underbelly. He clamps his jaws onto its neck, but can't get a good hold because of the spikes. The surprised titanosaur cranes his neck around and looks at the attacker. He bites at the Suchomimus' back, trying to make him let go. The Suchomimus digs his feet into the sand and pushes on the Ampelosaurus, which is standing on slippery algae covered rocks, and knocks it over. They both fall into the rapids of the river, the Suchomimus luckily still on top when they crash against rocks. He barely avoids being crushed by the weight of the larger alpha sauropod when they slam into a log. The Suchomimus lets go and the Ampelosaurus gets his footing a little ways down. Exhausted from trying not to drown and fighting off the Suchomimus, the Ampelosaurus drags himself on to an island in the middle of the widening river, taking a breather. The Suchomimus, an expert swimmer, crosses the water with ease and goes on the attack again. He slashes at the armorless patch on the side of the sauropod, tearing open his flesh and exposing bone. He bites into the wound, but the Ampelosaurus pulls back. He snaps his tail at the Suchomimus, but he is prepared, and jumps back. It still catches his shoulder, knocking him down. The Ampelosaurus turns around and rears up, slamming his feet down over the Suchomimus. He barely managed to slip out of the way, still suffering a broken tail. He roars in pain and runs around to the side of the sauropod, slamming into it. It is unphased, now on dry land, and pushes back the theropod. He tumbles to the end of the island and looks into the dark water. He stands up and growls at the Ampelosaurus. The Ampelosaurus saw the ramming attack was a success, and charges again. The Suchomimus dodges and the Ampelosaurus crashes into the water. He tries to turn around, but the Suchomimus knocks him off balance and he is carried a little ways downstream, where he then falls over a waterfall. The Suchomimus saw the dip in the water when he got rammed by the sauropod. He carefully walks over to the edge of the falls and looks over, seeing it is only about 20 feet down, and starts making his way down. He clambers down the rocks on the side of the waterfall, being careful of his cracked shoulder and broken tail. He finally makes it down and looks at the Ampelosaurus, which is badly injured. The shallow water below the waterfall was filled with large rocks. He had landed on his side on them, the relatively shallow water having not broken his fall well. Most of his ribs are broken and cracked, as is his armor on his left side. He struggles up, staying in the water and trying to retreat from the Suchomimus. It's too good for the Suchomimus to pass up. The sauropod is badly injured and in the Suchomimus' favorite terrain. The Suchomimus dives in and claws the Ampelosaurus again, once more causing him to lose his grip on the rocks. Too tired to fight, the Ampelosaurus lets his head fall underwater as the Suchomimus and him bump against rocks when being carried downstream. A pack of Troodon run alongside the carnage for a while, but once they hit the Deinosuchus' part of the river, they stop. Most of them aren't interested, continuing to lay in the setting sun, but a couple push themselves in. The current carries the Suchomimus and Ampelosaurus too far though, and they escape. Finally, the two tired giants break the cover of the thick jungle as they wash into the shallow mouth of the river. The Ampelosaurus is half-drowned, and the Suchomimus is exhausted from swimming a mile down the river. The Ampelosaurus lays almost completely still in the shallow water. The Suchomimus crawls to shore on all fours, then collapses. A young Spinosaurus and T-Rex walk the beach together, paying no attention to the Suchomimus and the sauropod, nor any fan's opinion. After a few minutes, the Suchomimus puts the Ampelosaurus out of its misery, snapping his jaws closed on its neck. He drags it a few feet, partially into the sand, and eats. A flock of Pteranodon circle in the sunset, preparing to scavenge the carcass when the Suchomimus finishes. The Suchomimus, now having closure and a meal, surveys his surroundings. There is an abundance of prey, and better yet, a scent of a female Suchomimus ready to mate somewhere nearby. He will now stay in this prey abundant place for the rest of his life. WINNER: SUCHOMIMUS The Ampelosaurus had size, armor, and a whip-like tail, but Suchomimus was smarter, faster, more weaponized and in this case, driven by hunger and a vendetta. Also, the terrain favored Suchomimus this time. Odds: 53-47 Questions? Comments? Hate mail? Call for a rematch? Let me know.

I love the end where the T-Rex and Spino are walking together.

Was Suchomimus really that heavy?

According to some estimates, yes. It makes sense that if a 43 foot T-Rex could weigh over 7 tons, an equal sized Suchomimus would be only 5 or so, being lightly built.

It would also follow your stats that Spino was up 12 tons. Seems reasonable for a 59 foot Spino.

Upon further inspection, I now think that Suchomimus was a little lighter than 5.5, but its possible. Spino got heavier than other spinosaurids because it was more of a land dinosaur than the others, having different bone structure and a crocodile-like skull, while the others had gharial-like skulls.

I noticed that too. It was more adapted for land than the others. It was like a grizzly bear, which hunt salmon in rivers as well as land prey, while the other spinosaurs were like polar bears and hippos, spending almost all of their time in water.

That's what a lot of paleontologists compare spinosaurs to. Well, I didn't get much sleep so I'm going to catch some z's. Later guys!

Great fight! Suchomimus is a personal favorite, so thanks for giving him credit! He went from an abandoned juvenile to a powerful adult with a hopeful future. And gotta love the Rex/Spino relationship slipped in there! Nice!

The Spino and T-Rex part was funny. Did you get the messed up jaw idea from that mini series Dinosaur Revolution?

Yeah, I knew the broken jaw thing sounded familiar.

Why where Rex and Spino friends though? Maybe they grew up together without parents, or maybe they discovered just how effective they are together. That is beside the point. DinoFights is a great series. They are very entertaining and the talking afterward is fun too.

Why did you do the Rex and Spino thing? Not opposed, just curious. Did you come up with it?

Actually, you can thank my son for that. I couldn't decide between Rex or Spino so I asked him and he said both.
